See Afros Become Galaxies and Gardens to Celebrate Natural Hair

Beyoncé’s now-famous lyric off of the #Lemonade album, “He better call Becky with the good hair,” has put discrimination against black women who sport their natural hair front and center in the cultural zeitgeist. Hair has long been politicized, especially for black women, but efforts to reclaim culture have given the natural-hair movement momentum. Now, more women are choosing to embrace their roots, rocking fierce afros and braids. And while we’ve seen hair art in many forms, the work of Pierre Jean-Louis’ Black Girl Magic series may be a favorite.

The artist has taken to turning women’s afros into gorgeous works of art, with the help of a little Photoshop. Using celeb photos and selfies, Jean-Louis creates incredible galaxies, forests, and blooming gardens on women’s heads, turning them into mythical and mystical goddesses. The images, which he chronicles on his Instagram, are intended to help celebrate natural hair.

“A lot of [black women] are brainwashed to not appreciate their natural beauty,” Pierre told Bored Panda. “Especially in 2016. Earlier this year I saw so many black queens who feel comfortable enough and proud to show their African heritage, so I decided to start this series to let them know how much I appreciate them and their natural beauty. I just want them to see how we black men see them when they’re rocking their natural hair. We see nothing but #strong #Goddesses & #queens thank you.”

And so do we.

Happy Friday ! Peace and love. @elaineafrika going where the wind blows.
