What’s Your Secret? Candy Chang Gets Confessions

Candy Chang Confessions 4

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas… and in the case of Candy Chang’s cathartic exhibition, those things stay there in the form of anonymous hand written sentences on squares of wood. Inspired by the likes of PostSecret, Shinto shrine prayer walls and the catholic church, “Confessions” was an event which encouraged viewers to enter private booths and write their secret on a veneer of wood. The collected words were then beautifully hung around the walls of the exhibition for all to observe and contemplate.

Almost all of us have a secret we don’t share with anyone, but many of us don’t even dare to write it down and release it. Confessions was an event that provided that opportunity – one were people could anonymously share their secret hopes, regrets, anxieties and fears in a public space. It was an event which helped people see they were not alone, but instead, that we are all in this together.

As Art Production Fund Artist-in-Residence at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Chang lived in the the hotel and casino for a month as she turned its P3 Studio into the space you see here. By the end of the event’s run (July 19 – August 12, 2012) more than 1500 confessions had been posted on the walls, with selected confessions being painted onto large red canvas’ by Chang:

”I still love her two girlfriends and five years later, Came here married to one girl and left married to two girls, I sold heroin to my friend and it ruined his life, I stole over 15,000 from the company I work for, I like porn more than my husband does, I’m afraid I’ll die young just like my mother, I’m in love with my best friend – too bad he’s married, I feel some days that I’m socially unacceptable, I don’t know what I am doing and I’m running out of time…”
