A Remixed Taxonomy of the Animal World

If combined groups of birds, mammals, insects and fish managed to converge on one point at high speed, the resulting collision might create something like the work of Penelope Kenny. After the fur, scales and feathers had settled, you’d be looking at perfectly formed remixes of the animal world: cockatoos with rabbit heads, hummingbirds with grasshopper bodies and one deer with a bouncy kangaroo torso. Animated Victorians: Anatomy from 111 Years Ago

It’s now time to take an animated look inside the human body – as seen in 1901. These fantastic anatomical animations were recently created by Maria Popova at one of our favorite sites, the very smart Brain Pickings. The images, illustrated by E. J. Stanley, are unique in that they are made up of three pages which flap-up; each turn revealing another layer of the human body, from bones and muscles, to brains and organs. [Read more…]

The Future… One Hundred Years Ago

In 100 years, what will the world look like? Will we be driving on the surface of Mars and every pair of sunglasses include holographic movie screens? These vintage French illustrations from 1910 imagined what the world would look like in the year 2000. Some ideas, like a teacher electrically pumping knowledge into student brains, are still pretty far off in the future. Other predictions however, hit pretty close to home (check out the projector screen video phone below!). One wonders, what will our predictions look like after the next 100 years?
