What does Seaweed say when it’s stuck at the bottom of the sea? “Kelp! Kelp!” If you’ve ever eaten Laffy Taffy, then you know there are lots of silly sea jokes, but what’s not funny is the damage that humans are causing to our most mysterious ecosystem. Underwater photographer Jason Isley sees this first hand, so he decided to bring some toys along with him to capture it firsthand. He creates comical scenes, like a sea slug getting a speeding ticket, along with some showcasing more serious environmental concerns, like ghost nets, litter, and fish bombing. Although he does occasionally brighten some images with Photoshop, the miniature scenes are actually set up underwater. Isley is the co-founder of ScubaZoo, a Malaysian underwater filming and photography company. [Read more...]

I’ve recently been staying in the most unusual of homes – one which some might not even consider a home at all – it’s a canal boat in London. Later it all floats downstream into the open ocean. [Read more...]

Fish Heads: A Splash of Underwater Portraiture

Tim Tadder creates highly stylized action shots of sports, exploration and adventure… but these examples delve into something a little different but equally action packed: underwater portraiture. In his series Fish Heads, he captures his wet subjects just as their faces have broken the surface tension of a pool of water, giving them expressions ranging from the serene to the spastic. As their heads plunge below the surface bubbles stretch around their faces, creating strange patterns in the surface reflection above. Adding to their unique style, the photos have the unique shortened depth of field and muted colors associated with underwater photography. [Read more...]

Providing shelter and food for a multitude of plants and animals, coral reefs are some of the most vibrant and diverse ecosystems on the planet.
