Bricksy-Banksy-recreated-with-Lego-by-Jeff-Friesen-9

More than any other street artist, the work of the mysterious Banksy has infiltrated our culture, spinning off tributes, from animated GIFs of his wall-based work to real-life reenactments of his characters. Photographer Jeff Friesen’s tribute to the artist is small on scale, but big on creativity. He’s been using his daughter June’s extensive LEGO collection to remake and remix a large number of Banksy’s work in miniature – and it’s fantastic stuff. [Read more...]

Little Worlds: Tiny Toys Clean Up London One Piece of Litter At a Time

tiny world

In a great big city with skyscrapers, architecture, and millions of people to look at, we don’t always take the time to look down. But only when looking down might you see the “Little Worlds” that co-exist in the city. The CG team from London-based creative agency Rushes proposed an adorable hypothesis of what happens to the litter on the streets while we’re busy looking up. A hot wheels sized submarine blasts away a cigarette butt in a puddle, a bulldozer adorably attempts to scoop up some chewing gum, and a pick up truck and crane pick up used matches one by one. Vesa Lehtimaki Lego Star Wars on Hoth 12

If you saw the original Star Wars movies as a kid, it’s hard not to be nostalgic about the trilogies’ characters – even if it’s for the bumbling Storm Troopers on the ice planet Hoth. Finnish illustrator and designer Vesa Lehtimäki was 10 years old when he saw the first installment in 1977, and he’s no stranger to the seductive pull of these now classic films. Over the past few years he’s been fulfilling childhood dreams in a playful yet professional manner – creating imaginative scenes from Hoth using his son’s LEGO sets. [Read more...]

2 92-Year-Old-Woman-Embroided-Astounding-Collection-of-Traditional-Japanese-Temari-Balls-2-600x744

Traditionally created from the remnants of tattered or old kimonos, temari (Japanese for hand ball) are a traditional toy and art form. When the tradition began, the kimono fabric would be wadded up in the shape of a ball and covered with strips of fabric, wrapped so tightly that it would bounce. Over time, it became a craft and the stitching become more intricate and artistic. The centers were replaced with rubber once it was brought to Japan and the art form became a competitive craft among women in the Japanese upper class. Here are some beautiful examples of temari created by a 92 year old grandmother, Nana Akua and photographed by her granddaughter.

50 years 50 toys infographic header

Ok, I’m going to ask a personal question: how old are you? Too personal? Ok, ok… I won’t dig that deep here. How about: what toy was popular for christmas when you were 10 years old? I know you remember it. In those exciting youthful days, there was always a “must have” gift on the list… something that would absolutely crush Christmas without finding it under the tree. Was it a Cabbage Patch Kid, a Hot Wheels car, or a Razor scooter? For me it was a remote control submarine from the Sears Wishbook. Remember that? This great graphic tracks some of the most popular holiday toys from the past 50 years. Is your favorite gift from Christmas past on the list? [Read more...]

Bricktease Blues Brothers

When it comes to old-school movie chase scenes, there are few that match the epic destructiveness of the classic mall car chase from The Blues Brothers. Similarly, there are few classic toys that have quite stood the test of time like LEGO. That’s just one part of why this creation from Australian stop-motion animator Duncan McConchie is so incredibly cool. It’s matched nearly frame for frame with the original film and features the same cool dialogue from John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd at their very best. [Read more...]

It’s hard to tell who is having more fun with this creative game: the parents or the kids. Parents Susan and Refe Tuma of Kansas City, MO came up with this “Dinovember” project to let their kids experience a little wonder and mystery, which is becoming increasingly less common in today’s technological world. The kids respond with shock, bewilderment, and laughter as they wake up to find their toy dinos in hilarious situations. In early November the mischievous reptiles were caught spray-painting cartoons on the wall in the living room and the Tuma’s 6-year-old said that they might need to have a garage sale to sell the plastic dinosaurs. LEGO Brick “Sketches” of Your Favorite Pop Culture Icons

Sunday 10.06.2013 , Posted by

1 Chris McVeigh

A self-declared “professional geek”, Chris McVeigh never stopped playing with toys. He uses LEGOS in conjunction with his creative eye and photography skills to make fun, colorful “sketches” of some of the best pop culture characters of all time. In this series of LEGO Brick Sketches, McVeigh challenges himself to stick to a 12″x16″ brick canvas, which is a similar size to some of his friends’ miniature marker sketches. His first one was Wolverine and after receiving a very positive response from his Instagram and Facebook fans, he decided to keep going. While the LEGO creations are obviously not real sketches, McVeigh plays up this theme perfectly with little LEGO markers in the correct colors next to each portrait. [Read more...]
