Thomas Herbrich Took 100,000 Photos of Smoke Over 3 Months to Capture 20 Images

Just like a snowflake, every plume of smoke is unique. Photographer Thomas Herbrich spent the last 3 months capturing the overlooked beauty of smoke, capturing 100,000 individual photographs as the delicate plumes drifted upwards. His images reveal the lucky instant when his subject danced into delightful forms that resemble paper curls, bouquets of flowers and even the human body. Many artists use marijuana to get the creative juices flowing while making art, but Brazilian Artist Fernando De La Rocque literally uses it in his creations. By blowing cannabis smoke onto precut stencils, the artist makes sepia images of religious and political icons. With his controversial work, De La Rocque shares his opinion that the substance should be decriminalized, stating, “more important than freedom to smoke marijuana is the freedom to think about it and make art with it.” [Read more…]
