Beirut is a vibrant place with a storied past… one which has left the city covered in scars that are still being repaired. Lebanese artist Marwan Rechmaoui often works with themes of urban development and social history revolving around his home country – in this case a large, floor based map of the current city layout. Titled Beirut Caoutchouc, the coastal Mediterranean city is recreated with heavy pieces of rubber embossed with roads, byways and segmented into 60 individual pieces that demarcate neighborhoods. Not Your Average Sand Castles
We’ve never posted about sand castles on Visual News… and for good reason. Sand castle art is usually the type of thing which you find relegated to cheesy television show competitions… you know, the kind with the loud, in-your-face commentator, a heavy reliance on monster themes, and commercial breaks every other minute. They are so large that they need to use a cherry picker to reach the top and clean them. Fiddian Green’s horse heads have become prominent London landmarks and he has said, “It is a great honour that Westminster city council have made this a permanent work of art for the city.” [Read more...]
Geometric/Organic: Sculptures Carved from Pencils
Did you know pencil sculpting was a thing? That’s right, using the common graphite filled writing device, artists are creating beautiful works of art which combine both the geometric, stackable nature of the lowly pencil, and the often organic forms of hand sculpted art. By glueing the hexagonal sticks of wood together and then carving the resulting block, large honeycomb-like structures can be created. Depending on if a colored pencil or graphite is used, the carved portions of the resulting forms reveal the inner writing material and form a flowing surface of pixilation. [Read more...]
