Real Cities Become Floating Islands in the Sky
If you remember the 80s cult classic The NeverEnding Story, you’ll recall the desperate part of the film when the world of Fantasia begins to crumble away, leaving little more than a small island of rock remaining to stand on. Now, award-winning art director Reinhard Krug has created a series of imagination gripping images which seem to bring that story to our world, manipulating aerial photographs of major cities so they appear to be floating on rock. Here the resemblance to the NeverEnding Story ends, however as Krug’s images are far more serene – placing the cities gently in a sky of puffy clouds. [Read more...]

Out of Place: Bizarre Manipulations Around Town
There’s always a bit of humor in the work of Robert Rickhoff. What at first seems like normal, even mundane pictures of the world, turn out to be fun juxtapositions of everyday objects – objects he’s digitally moved to places highly impractical for actual use. Urinals hang suspended on toilet walls, only accessible by a climbing wall; suburban streets are built with high speed jumps; and a volleyball court is placed in the center of a divided highway. Street Stone: Hipster Statues Take Over the Louvre
The famous statues at the Louvre in Paris recently got a stylish, sartorial makeover… hip new threads to go with their relaxed, modelesque demeanors. French photographer Léo Caillard teamed up with digital mastermind Alexis Persani to digitally rework the marble figures, bringing them into the modern era with plaid shirts, skinny jeans, boat shoes and, of course, Ray-Bans! Mysterious Houses Take Flight
Architecture, by its very nature, is grounded. Not so the strange flying buildings of Paris based artist Laurent Chehere. His series Flying Houses sees the rectangular structures take off, leaving their terrestrial domain to soar in the clouded skies above. The photo-manipulated images serve to feed Chehere’s interest in architecture, lifting it off its normal realm and showing off its hidden beauty. His work cuts away all the normal clutter, removes the anonymity of a normal house so that we can appreciate it as an individual unit. [Read more...]

Post-Apocalyptic Worlds Go Green
Most films which depict the world after an apocalyptic battle or disaster look something like the scenes of a Mad Max flick – the Australian outback or the Nevada high desert. In other words, something appropriately bone-dry, fitting of a scorched wasteland created by nuclear war or an exploding volcano. Not so the digital artworks of Nick Pedersen. His images appear downright tranquil, flipping the whole notion of apocalypse on its head and creating an image of the potential future that makes the catalyst for the apocalypse looks something a lot like western civilization. The Occupy movement put down roots all over the world at its peak, especially in the USA where finding a city center without encampments was unlikely last year. The Occupy movement has definitely lost some steam, or even disappeared all together in many places. In Denver, Colorado, a law has been passed making it illegal to camp on city sidewalks. Meanwhile in Germany, a different version of Occupy blew up in protest of Stuttgart21, the new train station and urban development project starting in Stuttgart, Germany. [Read more...]
