Quitting your good job at Cambridge University to go hitchhiking to Uganda is foolish, right? Why give up such security, status and comfortable living? For Pawel Huk the answer was street children. His heart was moved by the reality that there are over 10,000 children who have to survive on their own in Uganda. So, he quit his job and decided to hitchhike to Uganda while raising money and awareness about the social issue throughout the journey. You may have heard about the Store Buyout Project earlier this year: hearing that store owner Hercules was about to lose the lease on his small New York grocery store, a team of clever artists headed into Hercules Fancy Grocery and bought everything in the store. That’s right, everything. They then put it all up online and are currently re-selling it as art, encased in classy clear boxes to display the purchase. Instead of prints of duckies and rainbows, these baby blankets are printed with infographic-style instructions to help parents care for their newborns. A hefty yet graceful movement is transforming the world as you read, and it’s propelled by a wave of philanthropists on an unwavering quest to abolish global poverty. We’re calling it the Giving Movement, and it’s backed by bighearted philanthropists that range from billionaires giving away their fortunes, to people with much more modest bank accounts whose pledges are proportionately generous, if not more so.
Making the news recently was Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement to give away half of his fortune as part of The Giving Pledge. The sum promises to be mighty as Facebook has been valuated at over $50 billion. The Giving Pledge, which was started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, “is an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy,” according to GivingPledge.org.
