I thought I’d seen every type of book carving imaginable, until I ran across these jaw dropping creations by Guy Laramee. His works are so sculptural, so movingly natural in their form, they’ve really touched me. His works are inspired by a fascination with so-called progress in society: a thinking which says the book is dead, libraries are obsolete and technology is the only way of the future. [Read more...]
A Nearly Life-Sized Los Angeles Made of Cardboard
Los Angeles is a city of colorful extremes: at once a exotic star filled architectural playground and sprawling urban jungle of low-slung suburbia. Taking her cues from the less opulent spots in the city, artist Ana Serrano has created a colorful, nearly life-sized version of the place she was born and raised… out of cardboard. Her large, room filling work, features the myriad storefronts you would find wandering the streets of LA, from nail salons, to liquor stores and sex shops, all with their signature hand-painted signage, sparse plant life and brilliant paint jobs. This isn’t the high end of the city, but it’s certainly full of life and character. [Read more...]
An Alphabet of Ornate Quilled Typography

Sculptures from One Sheet of Paper
Popping out of a single sheet of white paper, these sculptures push the limit of possibility in paper arts. Artist Peter Callesen uses only a knife and folds to create amazingly detailed 3D scenes, leaving the empty space on the flat page as reminders of how the shapes where created (sometimes from surprising shapes). See a huge collection of Callesen’s work at petercallesen.com [Read more...]
Build a Paper Hasselblad Camera… That Works!
It’s not often that we run across a piece of paper art that is also functional, but that’s just what we have here: set designer and paper aficionado Kelly Angood has recently designed a strikingly lifelike Hasselblad camera made entirely of paper and corrugated cardboard. As you can see from the results below, the pinhole camera gives some very stylish and classic results on it’s medium format 120 film. [Read more...]
Graceful 3D Trees Cut into Discarded Books
Cleverly returning a hint of their paper based origins, artist Kylie Stillman takes old discarded books and carefully carves inverted bonzai tree reliefs in their pages. Her works come at a time when book art and carving are gaining in popularity, yet her works stand out as unique examples in the young trend. The Australian artist got her start at carving books in 2006 when she trimmed a bird into a discarded tome; she later gave her birds a place to sit, progressing to potted plants and now her current tree carvings. For her latest work featuring trees carved in stacks of boldly colored paper, see her website kyliestillman.com. [Read more...]
Paper-Based 3D Infographics: Pattern Is Crucial
Pattern Matters is a graphic design-based project that seeks to inspire designers to look at pattern from a variety of different angles. The project is a collection of hand-made 3D infographics which look at different ways to amplify the role of pattern in design and encourage tactile exploration. The main focus of the project is is to demonstrate that pattern is a crucial element in graphic design, and not merely a decorating tool. [Read more...]
Tiny Floating Origami That Moves
Looking like tiny floating snowflakes, French artist Etienne Cliquet’s new work Flottille is a beautiful thing to behold. Using tissue thin pieces of paper, Cliquet cuts patterns into pieces only 2 or 3 centimeters across. He then carefully folds his creations and places then in a shallow dish of water. Technically the pieces react to the capillary action of the water, drawing the folded pieces down… but to the eyes, it’s pure magic.
