How Fast the US Became Obese: Animated Map

It’s no secret that the US has a weight problem, but do you know how fast the country got fat? I’ll be honest, when I first saw this map animated by The Atlantic, my jaw literally dropped when it reached the 2000s… many states explode from around 20% obesity to over 30%. In just my lifetime (I was born in 1980) the whole US has gone from a relatively thin country to a place where the norm in many areas is to be overweight to obese. [Read more…]

It’s no surprise that the United States is facing an alarming obesity problem (no surprise because most people can name the location of every fast food joint in town, but hit a wall when asked about the times and locations of their local farmers markets). We’ve seen a lot of unusual ways to represent infographics lately, from in-the-field visualization tool-kits to a DIY stencil for pie-charts, it seems the ways to represent data is nearly limitless. This new advertisement for Canadian organization Active for Life, sees school children using their bodies to demonstrate the dwindling level of fitness in Canadian schools. While the precision of the data visualization may be inherently a little on the fuzzy side, the execution and over-all communication from the technique is spot-on. Check out those colorful arms!
