Thirteen years before a human ever traveled to outer space, on June 11, 1948, a heroic rhesus monkey named Albert made the journey, paving the way for future astronauts. Sadly Albert died of suffocation during the flight, but he was the first of many test monkeys. Before Albert only fruit flies had been sent to space, but he was the predecessor to monkeys Albert II through Albert VI, Gordo, Able, Sam, Miss Sam, Ham, and Enos among several other animals. Vintage European Photos Become Windows to the Past

We’ve seen this type of photo juxtaposition before with the works of Shawn Clover and Khánh Hmoong, but we’ve never seen such nostalgia inducing images as those by Kerényi Zoltán. He’s been finding vintage photographs of Europe (mostly of his native Hungary), finding their original location and capturing the place from the exact spot of the original photographer. Found in the Cupboard: Hungarian Matchbook Covers

Sometimes, hidden in long forgotten cupboards, there are treasures to be found. That was the experience for London based designer Kristian Bodnar, who discovered a small leather bound book full of vintage Hungarian matchbox covers tucked away in his grandmother’s house. The approximately 300 tiny images were meticulously collected by Bodnar’s father, Zoltan Bodnar, in his childhood. At the time, the images were glued to matchbox covers and could be soaked off by children to enjoy. You can imagine, for a designer, it was like finding pure gold. [Read more…]

Young and talented, Hungarian photographer Bence Bakonyi is making a name for himself through strikingly crisp and realistic images with a surreal twist. His style emphasizes locations carefully chosen for their bright and uniform color palettes. In his series Transform, he takes this concept to the limit, matching his subjects clothing perfectly to the hues and shapes of the world that surrounds them. Often, objects in the scene are frozen in motion or suspended; impossibly floating in center stage.
