Turkish multimedia artist and filmmaker Erdal Inci is back with more stunningly hypnotic GIFs. When we last featured his work, he was creating multiples of a single figure in endlessly repeating chains of motion. Now he’s created a series humbly called Light Pattern GIFs, and it’s equally hard to look away. [Read more...]

Brother-Brain-Bits-vs-Pics-4

If you were a gamer in the early ‘90s, you probably remember raving about the awesome graphics. It seemed like the future was right around the corner, about to pop into full color photo realism… I mean, just look at Jean-Luc Picard’s head!

To see how ‘real’ each of those games really was, Brother Brain (aka NYC artist John McGregor) has done movie/game mashups, showing us an animated look at how the old games measured up to reality… or at least a promotional picture. [Read more...]

Bizarelly Animated Portraits Repeat the Weirdness

Romain-Laurent-Absuredly-Animated-Portraits-head

Romain Laurent can take any normal scene and make it absolutely bizarre. In his recent series of animated portraits, he uses the looping GIF to repeat impossibly strange scenarios from people slapping themselves in the face (with an extra set of arms) or stepping in a circle while keeping their torso still, to blowing endless piles of leaves out from under their shirt. Why are these so ridiculous, and ridiculously fun? Perhaps it’s because this series is just a fun break from his normal routine of commercial projects. [Read more...]

Traceloops: Matthias Brown Uses Rotoscoping and Other Experimental Techniques on His Animated GIFs

Matthias-Brown-Traceloops-3-2

Animated GIFs are everywhere, but dig these fantastic looping animations from Matthias Brown! He’s using the old school technique of rotoscoping – a technique invented in 1915 by Max Fleischer where animators trace over footage, frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films (the same technique notoriously used in the animated ’70s version of The Lord of the Rings). Here the process lends a refreshingly analogue look to this viral form of digital media, in many cases even revealing the corner marks Brown uses to align his many frames. [Read more...]

A little while ago we covered the technology that went into Japanese band SOUR’s music video animated on spinning CDs… but that’s just the most recent in a long line of spinning disk animations. Almost 155 years before CompuServe launched their first animated GIF in 1987, Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau created the Phenakistoscope – commonly regarded as the first device to display a true animation. Awesomely Animated Illustrations by Robin Davey

1 Robin Davey

We’re loving the latest work by London-based artist Robin Davey. The freelance illustrator, designer, director, and animator has brought some of his recent commissioned illustrations for Wired Italia to life on his Tumblr page. The lead image is for an article about the possibility of an interstellar ark. Davey explains, “I think I was influenced here by a couple of weird sci-fi films that I probably saw at too young and impressionable an age, Silent Running and Saturn 3. No I don’t know why they’re naked.” Although a lot of his fine details were compromised in creating a file size that Tumblr could handle, Davey will be releasing the print version with all the details soon. What’s better than animated GIFs of jumping people in bunny costumes, dancing women in swimming caps or a fellow hawking iPads from below his trench coat? Not much. These illustrations from French graphic designer Laurene Boglio are so cool they’re starting to make us jealous… at least of her seriously refined style. [Read more...]
