High Fashion Illustrations Get Animated

Friday 11.30.2012 , Posted by

Tara Dougans sees “fashion as play, illustration as flexible and digital as opportunity.” These philosophies become quickly apparent in her recent series of illustrations which feature interpretations of high fashion work from clothiers as diverse as Thom Browne and Prada. Putting emphasis on the “opportunity” of digital, she’s created GIF animations of her large scale work specifically for the computer based world. [Read more...]

Women In Bubbles Over Paris- Long Before Photoshop

Saturday 11.24.2012 , Posted by

With photoshop anything is possible, but it is fascinating to see how creative photographers were before its time. This collection, from 1963, was shot by Melvin Sokolsky for Harper’s Bazaar “Bubble” Spring Collection. Each image features model Simone D’Aillencourt in elegant fashions of the time, floating in a bubble through the fashion capital of the world: Paris, France. The bubble was made of plexiglass and it was hung from a crane in each of the various locations, yet the strings that held it in place are completely invisible. [Read more...]

Let’s Get Retro Happy: Illustrations by Lotta Nieminen

Thursday 11.15.2012 , Posted by

These illustrations from Helsinki Finland born illustrator Lotta Nieminen, have a positively refreshing happiness to them. Perhaps it’s the heavy dose of mid-century nostalgia in their retro aesthetic, or maybe it’s the often intoxicating world-travel themes which so often appear in her work. I wouldn’t be surprised if she could take the most un-appealing places and – using her highly textured minimalist style – distill them down into something desirable and charming. [Read more...]

Pinned Skin: The Fashionable Collages of David Adey

Thursday 05.24.2012 , Posted by

Like a fragmented entomological display using portions of beautiful human skin, David Adey has created amazingly detailed collages of the human form and features. His works often incorporate pieces of famous celebrities like Rebecca Romijn and Misha Barton, cutting their image into miniscule shapes like butterflies, bats, birds and hearts, which he then arranges into a precisely pinned image on board. The result, when viewed from a distance, forms a whole which merges together in almost geometric form. [Read more...]

Re-membering Barbie: Fine Jewelry Made from the Icon

Friday 05.18.2012 , Posted by

To some, dismembered Barbie is creepy, to others, plastic body parts are the perfect medium for jewelry. Barbie is the icon of little girls everywhere and a representation of childhood to women who enjoyed Barbie’s company when they were small. One woman, Margaux Lange, uses the nostalgia of Barbie as inspiration for her jewelry line, Plastic Body Series. She repurposes salvaged body parts and combines them with silver and colored resins to make unique Barbie (and Ken) body jewelry. Though there is a slightly creepy vibe to the jewelry if you think about it too hard, it is still beautiful and creative in its own way. It takes a second look to realize that the jewelry is actually made from Barbie, and Lange finds interesting ways to use pretty much every last inch of the doll and her six-pack clad boyfriend. “The collection is a result of a life-long fascination with the icon, and a desire to re-purpose mass produced materials into handmade, wearable art jewelry,” Lange said on her Etsy profile.
