We’ve all seen jell-o jigglers in the form of letters, Easter eggs, dinosaurs, and more, but an artist by the name of Liz Hickok uses the colorful substance to create entire miniature cities! The transparent, tasty buildings are lit from beneath to show their gelatinous nature. Since the edible sculptures only last for a little while, photographs and video are the only lasting memory of each installation. The San Francisco Earthquake: Merging Then and Now

In the early morning hours of April 18th, 1906, San Franciscans awoke to a quick jolt beneath them. Then, following a short pause, the hilly city shook with ferocious intensity for 42 seconds. Streets buckled like ribbon, buildings toppled killing horses and people below… and that was just the beginning. Following the initial impact of the earthquake, fires broke out around the city. Many were started by inexperienced firefighters who, in attempts to build firebreaks by dynamiting destroyed buildings, ignited ruptured gas mains. 30 fires burned for 4 days and 4 nights, ultimately destroying approximately 25,000 buildings on 490 city blocks. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, tropical storms, glacial melting, record temperatures, floods, epic snowfalls, are all words we hear quite often lately.  All of these natural disasters, storms and phenomena are abnormal compared to our recorded history of weather.  After the Indian Ocean tsunami that hit Southeast Asia in 2004, the devastation of these events became much more real to the world. The recent storm that hit the east coast is estimated to be a multi-billion dollar catastrophe.  Then there is Japan, Chile and Haiti, the list goes on. [Read more...]

With the horrific earthquake and tsunami in Japan just days past artists and designers around the world are quickly putting their skills to work bringing attention to the important mission of caring for the people of the stricken country. Using the Rising Sun as their cue these posters are both beautiful and moving. Let’s all do our part and help this beautiful country get back on it’s feet!
