The Incredible Lunch Bag Drawings of Derek Benson

1 lunch_bagart

Just when we thought we had declared “The Coolest Dad Ever” to be sandwich bag artist David LaFerriere we discovered the incredible lunch bag drawings of Derek Benson and had to call it a tie. Based in Atlanta and trained in graphic design, Benson is a video game developer who spends his lunch breaks creating beautiful illustrations on brown paper bags for his daughter and two sons to carry their lunches in. The drawings are done in oil pastels and Sharpie paint pens and cover a wide array of characters from cartoons, movies, and books that he has enjoyed with his children. Benson started this sweet gesture in 2008 and since many of the bags get thrown away (if the kids’ teachers and friends don’t scoop them up), he started photographing his work and posting it on Tumblr.

For most people a boring job leads to hours of life that you regret you’ll never get back, but barista Mike Breach seized the downtime at his hotel to master the art of Latte portraiture. A self-proclaimed “espressionist” he sees each latte as a unique palette and uses a bamboo skewer as a paintbrush, swirling espresso as paint on his milk foam canvas. The fact that the designs only last 3 minutes makes them more personal- it’s a unique experience for each customer. Currently employed by The Smile To Go, Breach’s designs surely send customers off with a smile. From rock stars, to extraterrestrials, to artists, and some of the most brilliant minds, Breach never runs out of ideas for his latte portraits.
