In the next couple of months, a few of Oakland’s buildings will be getting a beautiful face lift. Talented painter, artist, and muralist Joshua Mays will be working on a series of 4 murals which he calls BEACON and hopes to finish by October 1st, 2014. In his signature dreamlike style, with soft colors, rich details, and luscious layers ripe with feminine energy, Mays will transform old buildings into conversation pieces. From his drawings to his paintings and especially his murals, there is so much to see that even after 10 minutes of deep stares, you can still discover new things. Mays also has murals up in Philadelphia, Denver, Washington D.C., Portland, and Mexico City. [Read more…]

1 cloud like landscape by kohei nawa

Always forging new roads into the possibilities for sculpture, Kohei Nawa is one of Japan’s most inspiring young artists. We’ve seen his crystal-beaded taxidermy sculptures in PixCell and now he experiments with foam solids to create a cloud-like dream world in a black room. The material appears flimsy, yet stays in position giving off a vibe that it is from another planet. The installation appeared at the Aichi Triennale 2013 with a theme of Awakening. [Read more…]

1 private moon

There is not much more beautiful than being in nature late at night and seeing your surroundings illuminated by the moon, but what if you could take that natural night light with you to light up darkness wherever you go? This idea was the inspiration for an installation of photographs by Leonid Tishkov and Boris Bendikov. The Russian artists titled the series “Private Moon” and hoped to tell an everlasting love story of a man who becomes so infatuated with the majestic, crescent moon that he takes her with him as he travels from the mountains to the country to the city and everywhere in between. Koh was born in Korea and relocated to Canada in 2006 to complete his BAA in illustration at Sheridan College in Ontario. Koh states, “In my paintings, I always think I should be integrated with nature and animals as I put myself into each painting and I want to share my thought and connect with people through my works. As I see, feel, and hear animals, I also find more of myself.” [Read more…]

Bohemian Dreams in Digital Art

Thursday 04.19.2012 , Posted by

Somewhere between the work of Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam lies the beautifully imaginative art of Alexander Jansson. His digital painting style is full of fuzzy fauna, twisted flora and plenty of stylish victorian houses… all with the dark and mysterious look you would expect in some bohemian’s dream. The deliciously rich and inviting colors beg your eye to explore the many layers of detail: lighted homes on elephants backs, glowing lanterns over shimmering water. It’s a world that looks thrilling and rewarding to inhabit. [Read more…]

Dream Diary: Unsettling Images from a Slumbering Mind

Friday 04.13.2012 , Posted by

Alright, I just posted about an app that can control your dreams, but these dream themed illustrations were just too cool to pass up. To me they look a lot like the drawings you’d find in a home improvement book about tile and masonry work or something titled “101 House Cleaning Tips Your Mom Never Told You”… only these images have a unnervingly surreal subject matter that takes them in a completely different direction.
