#TBT: 10 Vintage Ads Featuring Creepy Kids

We like a good #TBT because vintage visual content provides plenty of inspiration. From classic ads to historic data visualization, plenty of things from the past still hold up. But some things should definitely be forgotten by history. While perusing the plethora of vintage ads on the Internet, we noticed a surprising trend: a lot of vintage ads geared toward kids have a creep factor turned up to 11. Whether it’s the inappropriate products being sold or the Children of the Corn vibe in the way they’re depicted, it’s a little unnerving. Here are a few of our faves.

Adolescent Obesity Has More Than Quadrupled in 3 Decades

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past three decades. In 1980, just 7% of children 6-11, and 5% of adolescents 12-19 were obese. Today those numbers have jumped to 18% and 21% respectively.

The CDC points out that these kids aren’t simply at risk from the long term effects of being overweight – there are a host of immediate health effects like a high risk factor for cardiovascular disease (with 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease), or a far higher chance of being pre-diabetic.

The preventative solutions the CDC puts forward are nothing new. Kids need more physical activity, and more healthy food.

After a Record High, Single Motherhood is on the Decline

Until 2008, the birthrate for unmarried mothers was mysteriously on the rise. That’s changing now. After a peak of nearly 1.73 million children born to unmarried women in 2008, that number declined to 1.61 million in 2013.

Where are the sharpest declines? According to the Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Services, in the demographics that typically have the highest rates of single motherhood: teenagers; black and Hispanic women; and those without a college degree. Where numbers continue to rise are in women 35 years or older. This trend possibly points to changing norms in family structure – some women are having babies outside of marriage by choice, including many who have partners but choose not to get married.

My First Rifle: Photos of Kids and Their Guns

For much of the western world, owning a gun is near unthinkable… let alone giving one to your young child. That’s part of what prompted Dutch photographer An-Sofie Kesteleyn to jump on a plane for America, just one month after seeing the tragic story of a 5-year old boy in Kentucky who killed his 2-year old sister with a practice rifle (an event which was deemed an accident).

A Rescue Dog and Her Little Boy Share Hats

Meet Zoey and Jasper – a rescue dog and her little boy. The duo are quickly making friends around the internet with their quirky collection of matching hats and the attitudes to match. Jasper is a spunky little 10 month old Chinese-Korean kid with loads of character and a big happy smile. Zoey is a rescue dog that had a rough start. Born in front of a small store in Taiwan, she was literally washed into the gutter before a schoolgirl rescued Zoey and her siblings and put them up for adoption with Animal Rescue Team Taiwan. Soon she was transported to Los Angeles and a happy new life, with a new mom – commercial photographer Grace Chon.

This Preschooler is Doing Impressive Yoga with Her Mom

There’s plenty of hype about ‘couples yoga’ but what if your partner was your pre-school aged child? That’s the team we see here – yogo instructor Laura Kasperzak busting out some impressive moves with her very young daughter. Some of their poses are beautiful, some are cute, and others are jaw dropping… and with over 700,000 followers on Instagram, we’re not the only ones impressed.

Couple Remakes Famous Movie Scenes With Their Baby and “Domestic Junk”

You’ve seen these movies before, but never like this. Finding themselves with a house full of cardboard boxes from their recent international move, and a new-ish baby, this couple have been creating scenes from their favorite films built entirely from their “favorite domestic junk”. Look closely and you’ll spot plastic cutlery as teeth, overturned shelving as boats and a ridiculous amount of family creativity.

Creative Food Ideas to Encourage Your Children to Eat

Lee Samantha was very pregnant with her second child when she decided to make creative food dishes for her daughter so that she could eat independently. She wasn’t a professional chef or graduate of a prestigious culinary school, but Samantha began experimenting with bento style meals and it became an instant success with her daughter.

Cool Dad Colors His Kids Drawings While on Business Trips

Tatsputin Colors His Kids Drawings 1

How do you keep connected with your kids while traveling? For a Redditor going by the name Tatsputin, the answer is coloring in his children’s drawings while he’s flying out of state. With just their lines to go on, he fills in each with colored pencil giving each image lighting, dimension, “and whatever I feel the original drawing would need to be feasible.” The results are great and are keeping his kids excited to see what he brings home.

An Artistic Collaboration With a 4-Year Old

Collaborating with a 4 year old 1

Sometimes we complain about the way our collaborators work with us on a project – “Why won’t you just grow up!!” – but what if that helper was just a 4 year old child? When Mica Angela Hendricks, a professional illustrator, bought a new sketchbook, her young daughter ditched her own art supplies and wanted to contribute to her mothers work. The result is a charming combination of grown up perfection and youthful imagination.
