Up In Smoke: Exhaled Smoke Art

Monday 11.12.2012 , Posted by

Many artists use marijuana to get the creative juices flowing while making art, but Brazilian Artist Fernando De La Rocque literally uses it in his creations. By blowing cannabis smoke onto precut stencils, the artist makes sepia images of religious and political icons. With his controversial work, De La Rocque shares his opinion that the substance should be decriminalized, stating, “more important than freedom to smoke marijuana is the freedom to think about it and make art with it.” [Read more...]

3D Currency Collages Made From a World of Money

Wednesday 06.13.2012 , Posted by

We’ve seen money collages and sculptures plenty of times, from the politically charged works of Chad Person to the 3D carvings of Scott Campbell. One major thing is different about these works however: these are made from different currencies sourced from countries around the world. The effect is quite striking and beautiful, because unlike the monochromatic U.S. currency used in the aforementioned works, these are multi-colored with designs unfamiliar to many eyes. Through their multi-cultural paper source, these works seem to bring forth a message of unity, collaboration and harmony in the world… and the gracefully composed designs send exactly the same message. Thursday 05.10.2012 , Posted by

Throughout the late 19th century up until the 1990s, these captivating and strangely painted portraits (retratos pintados) were a common practice in rural northeastern Brazil. Initially he would take pealing pieces from the plywood barriers around the city, falling apart and changing color in the weather. He used the pieces as canvas for his paintings, but later realized that the flexible nature of the medium could be used to make incredible installations. He starts with a skeleton of purchased plywood, and then uses the pieces of plywood that he finds to give texture and color to the structure. Partying in Rio: A Tilt-Shift Carnival Film

Tuesday 02.28.2012 , Posted by

Music, costumes, masquerades, dancing, food and five days of all night partying describes Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Film director and musician Jarbas Agnelli, in partnership with photographer and filmmaker, Keith Loutit, set out to capture this amazing event on camera in a way it has never been seen before. In the five days of carnival, the pair shot 167,978 photos, then with masterful editing and a soundtrack composed by Agnelli himself, they composed a tilt-shift style video from their stills titled The City of Samba. The final product is nothing less than amazing. The original score fits perfectly with what is being seen and conveys all of the right emotions. Watching the video, you forget that they are still shots and the effect of the tilt-shift makes everything look like claymation. A genius way to change the regular perspective of a larger than life festival. [Read more...]
