Violaine & Jeremy Beards 1

Merging the worlds of animal, human and plant life, French illustrators Violaine & Jeremy have created a surprising collection of pen illustrations that highlight facial hair in the most unusual way. Here, a gorilla sprouts a veritable menagerie of flora and fauna in beard-like form. Hidden amongst the foliage are tropical birds, butterflies, and of course, bananas. Without seeing it first, this would seem a bizarre combination – but realized with a skiled hand, their images strike an beautiful, if unexpected, harmony. [Read more...]

There’s facial hair, and then there’s strapping a live, sharp clawed animal to your face. Either way it’s pretty manly. That’s the gist behind this 3 part series of photo manipulations that sees various members of the Mustelidae family keeping faces warm (no men or animals were harmed in the making).

The series was created by image production company Electric Art of Sydney for Schick New Zealand and their “Free Your Skin” campaign.

But honestly – if you had a beard this gloriously alive, would you really want to shave it off? [Read more...]

National Beard & Mustache Championships by Greg Anderson 1

Think you’ve got facial hair? Nope. I thought I had a mustache until I saw these absolutely ridiculous portraits from the 4th Annual National Beard and Mustache Championships in New Orleans. There are up-do’s, out-do’s, loop-d-loops… well, I don’t know what to call them. It’s basically face-based sculpture, it’s bizarre and wacky. We’re thankful Las Vegas-based photographer Greg Anderson was there to capture the majesty of these growing works of art. [Read more...]

Beards are awesome, in the old sense of the word. Like when you can hardly breath it is so awesome. Like when you might faint, fall over and land on the dog from the pure awesomeness. What is it about a man with a beard that says so much? Photographer Joseph D.R. OLeary has been asking that question as he creates more than 130 portraits of bearded men in his exquisite and revealing style. “Are bearded men more attractive? Respectable? Trustworthy? Does it define him, or not?” His playful, yet serious project “Of Beards and Men” explores these themes and is now the subject of a Kickstarter project to launch his limited-edition coffee table book. Happily, it looks well on its way to success. [Read more...]

1 Kang San

I’m in love with these little bearded gnome creatures by Kang San. I would love to hop on the little beard ladder and climb my way up to the fantasy land behind the whiskers. Each little guy is so joyful to share the space inside of his head with anyone who would like to inhabit it. The Korean artist, who is a freelance concept designer, states the purpose behind his work: “I had a desire to overcome a stereotype of mine. So I enjoyed new challenges which made me what I am. Also it has become the motive of my works.” See more of his drawings and projects on Jamsan.com. [Read more...]

As many men and women will attest, there’s nothing quite like a nice full-grown beard… and photographer Justin Muir captures them beautifully in his newly published collection A Book of Beards. Not only is this a stunning collection of facial hair around the midwest United States, but also a project designed to make a difference: all proceeds from the first pressing of this book will go to help a friend; all additional proceeds go to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
