Photo manipulations have been a mainstay of photography, even before the advent of Photoshop, but with the ubiquitous use of program by everyone and their brother, the world has become flooded with seriously questionable work. Luckily the other day we ran across the work of Thomas Barbéy to give us hope. His pieces bring back a classic surreal quality, perhaps because he does this the old fashioned way – with carefully planned film based photographs, selection of negatives and maybe even a bit of airbrushing. Estonian Illustrations made with Cut Paper
When you look at the work of Estonian illustrator, graphic designer and art director Eiko Ojala, it’s hard to imagine it’s just flat pieces of paper. Even in printed form his works seem to spring from the page, bringing a surprising extra layer of dynamic detail to his otherwise wonderful illustrative style. As you can see, this is far beyond typical arts & crafts time. [Read more...]
Paper from the Past: Collage by Lars Henkel
Maybe it’s a stretch, but something about the linear and technological elements in Lars Henkel’s excellent collages reminds me of Marcel Duchamp’s famous The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even. Perhaps it’s the fact that the technical elements in his work don’t quite make sense (many aren’t even connected to anything), or that there is a distinct lean towards early 20th century imagery and a beige color palette. The many levels of detail certainly lead us to believe that there is more going on than meets the eye. [Read more...]
Accurate, Real Life Recreation of Van Gogh’s Portrait
When it comes to perfect remakes of famous artwork, few have come close to this photographic tribute to Van Gogh’s self-portrait. In fact, if you were flipping through an art book and saw this photograph, you might just keep going without realizing it wasn’t the original painting. [Read more...]
Rebecca Mock: Illustrations in Motion
There’s something quietly contemplative about the works of Brooklyn-based illustrator Rebecca Mock. In the romantic animated image we see above, we are almost transported to the room, the level of realism – however cartoonish – easily gives us the imagined sound of ceiling fans in summer. Many of her illustrations have the clean, colorful style of the now classic Japanese animations from Studio Ghibli… it’s a place we definitely want to visit. [Read more...]
Stenciled Wheels: Hand-Painted Car Posters
When I first ran across artist Christopher Holewski’s great video about how he creates his car themed posters, I was seriously impressed with the results. His print shop Manual Designs specializes in creating automotive based designs of both classic and modern cars (with an obvious love for anything BMW). The most unique thing about his work? He creates the posters using stencils and spray paint. The result is posters with bold details and just enough overspray to reveal their cool hand-made origins. [Read more...]
Amanda Beck: Waltzing Animals in a Victorian World
Take a trip back in time with us, to a world where fashion is seriously classy and the people manage to be proper and animalistic at the same time. Amanda Beck creates imaginatively reworked images featuring a host of victorian figures with animal heads. Her mixed media work stands out in a world of Photoshop, using traditional techniques to create images which deftly trick the eye and take us into a fantastically refined dream world. [Read more...]
A Quiet Tribute to Modern Concrete Architecture
At first glance the paintings of Berlin based Jens Hausmann are simply beautiful images of sharply linear modern architecture. But, when one looks below the surface of these utopian cement spaces there is something far more captivating than simple homages to a building form. What begins to emerge is a sense of the surreal, mainly driven by otherworldly colors and wide angle perspectives, and partly by the subtle placement of his occasionally visiting figures: one person stares at the wall; another kneels, their head hiding in a cupboard. It’s a beautifully quiet, if slightly un-nerving, world. [Read more...]
Dreamy Illustrations from Huebucket
The wildly flourishing designs of Bangkok based illustrator Chalermphol H. are a lot like that moment you wake up from a dream, unsure of whether you’re really back in reality. Each example from this talented artist seems to feature one form of reality merging into another; readers fall asleep in their books; a ribcage transforms into a verdant and growing floral display; and wave like sheets wash over two sleeping lovers. It’s a serene reality which begs to be explored in its smallest details. [Read more...]
Fine Victorian Lace: Delicate Carvings in Eggshells
Looking like fine victorian lace, the carved eggs created by Beth Ann Magnuson are the definition of the word delicate. On each shell she free-hand draws the final patterns she envisions carved into the egg. She then empties the content of the shell through a small hole. The true magic begins as she removes each tiny shape using a fine rotary cutting tool. [Read more...]
