Manic and Zany: Looping GIF Animations

Tuesday 07.31.2012 , Posted by

Zach Cohen’s short gif animations loop with a manic character all his own, providing us with a glimpse inside his gloriously zany mind. Many of his images seem to spring from normality and through some ludicrous transition in a matter of a few seconds… one moment we are looking at a muscular man, the next he has used those muscles to tear himself into two identical copies of himself, finally he devours his copy and it all begins again. Though only a short few seconds long, each animation holds us happily captive for far longer. [Read more...]

In the case of this new video for Michael Andrews’ new single “Bubbles in Space, something sublimely nostalgic and incredibly fun. First Computer Graphics Film Ever from 1963

Wednesday 07.18.2012 , Posted by

The short video you are about to see, created and narrated by Edward E. Zajac, is quite possibly the first computer graphics film ever made; a project to model the theoretical construct of how a box-shaped satellite would move through space. It was made on an IBM 7090 or 7094 series computer using hand-fed programmed calculations in FORTRAN via punchcards and running them through a program called ORBIT that his co-worker Frank Sinden created, printing the output onto microfilm. Pretty impressive for the year 1963! [Read more...]

I dare you not to love this new ad from Honda South Africa. Bizarre Animations from Library of Congress Photos

Monday 04.09.2012 , Posted by

If the geniuses behind Monty Python had been working a number of decades earlier, their films might have looked a lot like these quirky remixed photographs from Flux Machine, the strange blog of Kevin Weir. Using vintage imagery from The Library of Congress, Weir cuts and animates his moving GIFs in a style reminiscent of the Flying Circus’ animations, creating something otherworldly and in this case, even a little creepy. Black and white images of russian Czars, german soldiers and even entire buildings, first appear as if they are the original print, then they quickly morph into something bizarre, unexpected and often amusing. The Birth, Life and Death of a Soldier… As Told by a Hand

Friday 03.09.2012 , Posted by

Sometimes we find ourselves impressed by the simple things in life, the things that when done correctly become highly moving and meaningful… take hand puppetry for example. It’s not everyday that we run across a video of a painted hand, complete with plastic googly eyes, and find ourselves deeply moved, but that’s exactly what this video “Fine” has done. A tribute to the great sacrifices soldiers around the world pay for their dedication to home and country, Italian filmmaker Virgilio Villoresi’s expressive hand gestures take us through the life of a solder, from his hopeful birth to his ultimate demise in combat.
