Cradle of Mir: Interview with Burning Man Art Crew from Russia

This year at Burning Man, there were over 350 registered art installations. One of the largest examples on the Playa was called the Cradle of Mir. It was constructed by a large crew consisting of artists, engineers, producers and enthusiasts with extensive experience organizing and participating in different Russian festivals, most broadly involved in “Pustye Holmi” (translated literally as Empty Hills), the festival of art, music and endless creativity. In the past year, we covered artist Kirsten Berg’s mesmerizing art installations that she brought to Burning Man from 2010-2012. This year she has another that is sure to attract and stimulate the many eyes on the playa. It is called (In)Visible, and it is currently going through a kickstarter campaign aimed at bringing it to Burning Man. Every year thousands of enlightened human beings travel from all over the planet to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to participate in the Burning Man gathering. There is anything and everything there including many large scale art installations that take years to build sometimes. At this year’s gathering, there will be over 400 such art installations set up all over the desert area. While the Burning Man organization is very supportive of the arts on the “playa,” it is only partially funding about 1/7th of all the installations this year. [Read more...]

New Documentary Tells the History of Wikileaks

Academy Award winning director Alex Gibney has composed a riveting, fascinating expose on the controversial website WikiLeaks. The name of the movie is titled “We Steal Secrets, the Story of WikiLeaks” and is set to be released May 24. It has already generated buzz among fans and political foes alike, sparking conversations about the controversial founder Julian Assange and the organization itself. The documentary focuses on the rise and near fall of Assange since the launch of Wikileaks in 2006. [Read more...]

24 C.O.R.E. Projects Approved for Burning Man 2013

The “Circle of Regional Effigies,” better known as C.O.R.E., is a collaborative exhibition of art installations built from regional burning man communities around the world. Whether in France, China or Idaho, groups of “burners” come together to design, build, and eventually burn their effigy. The structures cannot exceed 20 ft by 20 ft (6.1 m by 6.1m) and must consist of mostly wood material. Typically, the designs for C.O.R.E. have some inspiration from symbols of a particular region. Last year, there was a longhorn bull from Houston, trees and clouds from Seattle and a Cod from Boston. It’s less than six months until Burning Man begins, so the large scale art installations and their creators are beginning to surface, making their needs for support known. Each year, hundreds of unique art installations are displayed at Black Rock City, the temporary community of 50,000-plus people that attend Burning Man every Summer. Large, medium or small, there are all sorts of amazing art projects that are brought to the gathering each year. Cars zoom down straightaways at speeds up to 200 mph (320 km), slow and accelerate out of corners, and tweak their way through impossible hairpin turns. These frequent cliff hanging race moments are what make the sport so spectacular.
