Two things never seem to change about crude oil: the constant warnings that our thirst for it is unsustainable, and the fact that we continue to use it like it will last forever. These two troubling trends are issues which should be dealt with, and quickly, as this intriguing motion graphic from The Post Carbon Institute points out. [Read more...]
New Simulation Asks: Is This How Our Universe Formed?
Do you ever wonder how our universe formed? There are many theories and speculations that have been brought to the public consciousness, and while some are generally more accepted than others, the truth is, we don’t really know how our universe came about. Yet, as technology today develops and scientists gain access to a wider range of tools to explore the secrets of our beginnings, new findings shed further light on the history of the universe. How to Generate Good Ideas
Good ideas aren’t the easiest thing to come by, and many times they seem to hit right out of the blue. While some may have a “Eureka!” moment while in the shower, an “ah ha” moment on the drive into work, or a “that’s funny…” moment (if you’re a scientist in the laboratory); they didn’t just come from nowhere. While these may be some of best places ideas hit us, there is still a looming question that needs to be answered: how are good ideas generated? We all know they simply aren’t lying around like seashells on a beach waiting for us to pick them up, nor are they so random. [Read more...]
KT Tape Brightens the London Olympics
Besides a ridiculous amount of neon on shoes, shorts, tops and jackets adorning the sinewy bodies of the world’s top athletes this year at the 2012 London Olympics, there’s also brightly colored tape decorating their bodies. It’s KT Tape, and it’s used to prevent injuries, and help the body recover from a hard day out on the training grounds or in the competition arenas. It’s applied to the lengths of their dense, rugged muscles to help aid aching joints, shin splints and tennis elbows. Olympic athletes from track and field stars, to soccer players and water polo swimmers have all been known to use it. [Read more...]
Atom Boy: An Artful Animation of the Molecular World
Isn’t it great when inspiration strikes out of nowhere? Having no other plan than to do some “fun things” in Cinema 4D, graphic designer and producer Joachim Ljunggren found his simple experiments expanding into something much bigger. His artful piece Atom Boy takes us into a shiny world of molecular structures, bouncing around and bonding with each other in a stark white world. The resulting motion graphic short is intriguing in its clever transitions and physics along with its gorgeous lighting and squeaky clean reflections. [Read more...]
Powering Ag: An Energy Challenge For Development
Our world is continually coming up with new ways to use its resources and technological advancements to use them more efficiently. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that there are still people in the world incapable of creating enough food for their families and communities to thrive or sometimes even survive. Helping developing and low-income nations step into modern times has been a constant challenge for decades, and expanding access to clean energy is a key component of global development efforts. But, how are we going to do this? This motion graphic created by Powering Agriculture, an initiative of the United States Agency of International Development (USAID), looks at how clean energy technology can be the answer. London Streets Become an Experimental Symphony
In an age of ever louder sounds surrounding our daily life, designer Mark McKeague asks an interesting question: “can the city become a symphony?” We’re not talking about simply using jackhammers and the sound of passing busses to create some form of Stomp like cacophony of crashes and bangs, but rather using modern technology to create synthesized sounds which could be quite beautiful. In Order to Control: Typography Shadows
It’s a strange experience when you see your shadow and it doesn’t match up with reality… especially when it’s made of bright, moving text. That’s the experience visitors to the Freemote Arts and Co-Creation Festival were treated to in Utrecht, Holland. The interactive experience, created by Nota Bene and called In Order to Control, featured a patch of moving text on the floor of the display space. When curious observers stepped onto the patch of typography to read it, their silhouette was cast on the wall before them in the same moving text. It was as if their shadow had been cut from the floor below and moved to the wall. Clever. [Read more...]
No Kid Hungry: Campaign to End Childhood Hunger
The thought of children going to sleep hungry anywhere in the world is tough to swallow. People may think that hunger is a problem which resides firmly in the hands of third world countries — but they’re mistaken. America has a problem too. America has the food and programs in place to end childhood hunger, but they are up against a lot: the stigmas and embarrassments that surround hunger, the challenges presented by access to healthy food, and the struggle to connect children with the resources they need to thrive. Santtu’s Painterly 3D Illustrations Go Pop!
I really can’t pull my eyes away from these snappy illustrations by Santtu Mustonen. His highly unique style has a three dimensional, painterly look that is unlike anything I’ve seen. The renderings are as crisp as they are bright, many looking like extruded swirls of multi-colored wet paint. Only adding to the grip this work has on my attention, Santtu has animated a number of his illustrations in GIF form, giving them some of the smoothest and perfectly rendered motion I’ve seen from this sort of thing.
