Using only paper as his materials, graphic designer Taras Lesko was recently commissioned by Audi to create a model version of their snappy new A7 automobile. Putting his print, cut and paste skills to work, Lesko came up with a version of the car that looks almost as if it could really drive. Usually when I think about bicycle safety my mind wanders to huge egg shaped helmets, roasting my head on a hot summer days… but when Ethan Frier and Johnathan Ota think safety on two wheels, they somehow make it very cool. The two industrial design students at Carnegie Mellon University came up with a wheel mounted lighting system that is not only a good safety feature, it makes you look like you’re riding a Light Cycle from Tron too. Looking like tiny floating snowflakes, French artist Etienne Cliquet’s new work Flottille is a beautiful thing to behold. Using tissue thin pieces of paper, Cliquet cuts patterns into pieces only 2 or 3 centimeters across. He then carefully folds his creations and places then in a shallow dish of water. Technically the pieces react to the capillary action of the water, drawing the folded pieces down… but to the eyes, it’s pure magic.
Designer Nathaniel Whitcomb has teamed up with Brooklyn, NY based band Holy Spirits to create a series of motion collages set to the bands music. Whitcomb uses images from 1970s-era National Geographic magazines to create his compositions. He began the partnership by sending one of his collages to Holy Spirits on an impulse; the band liked them so much they asked him to produce motion collages for every track off their new EP, The Afternoon’s Blood.
Music videos have been an integral part of the music industry since they rose to prominence in the 80s, and the popularity of music videos on the internet continues to make them fashionable today. Fittingly narrated by William Shatner, NASA released a short film today documenting the spectacular history of the Space Shuttle. The 14 minute video describes the vehicles unlikely birth in “unsettled times” and takes us through it’s initial development. We then turn to the momentous amount of preparation required for each shuttle flight, focusing on the orbiter Endeavor’s upcomming final mission. Slated for retirement in June 2011, the video acts as a fond farewell to the famed Shuttle program which has now operated for over 30 years.

In a not so distant future filled with blackbirds, a loving couple does battle with an daily urban jungle of mobile phones and electronic palm readers. The heavily textured animation makes quick, and visually smart transitions based upon shape and pattern, making scenes seamlessly merge one into another. Directed by Matthias Hoegg at the Royal College of Art in London, the film was nominated for a BAFTA in Short Animation.
