Most people that plan a trip to South East Asia… actually go. But not Zilla van den Born. She skipped out on all the travel to create a highly provocative school project that’s making waves around the internet. Why did she do it? [Read more…]
This is seriously impressive. Penny Miller made a time-lapse video of an Amish barn raising in rural Ohio, capturing the gracefully efficiency required to put up the structure and nearly complete it in just 10 hours, 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Here we see it compressed into a three and a half minute video. [Read more…]
Next time you look through an IKEA catalogue remember this: 75% of those photos aren’t even photos. That’s right, from the incredibly natural looking interior ‘photographs’ to the product images themselves, many are actually very well done CGI renderings. Perhaps this is why their images look so impossibly perfect. [Read more…]
When it comes to exploring the vast unknown that is space, one of the biggest problems is, ironically, a lack of space. But now a team of research engineers at Brigham Young University, led by professor Larry Howell, are thinking outside the box to figure out how to get more inside the box and have begun applying origami principles to rigid solar panels. Collaborating with NASA and origami expert Robert Lang, their model origami solar array could be transported into space expand to almost 10 times its stored size once unfolded. [Read more…]

We are pleased to present the best thing to happen to bread since sliced bread. As one commenter on Vimeo said: “Someone get this technology to Björk immediately!!” Japanese producer Nobumichi Asai and Omote have created a perfect synergy between real-time face tracking and projection mapping – and the results are far out.
This video demonstrates the real-time transformation of a woman’s face from completely normal (besides some tiny tracking markers) into something shockingly different. In quick succession, her face changes from its natural state, to covered in thick makeup, and then to things far more psychedelic. [Read more…]
You don’t hear many people complaining about jets having too many windows. The row of tiny peepholes they call windows are a poor view to the spectacular world outside, but Technicon Design – France has hit upon a stunning business jet concept that would really change that.
For their IXION Windowless Jet Concept they’ve completely eliminated windows in the cabin, instead imagining an interior lined with curving video screens. Using fuselage and wing mounted cameras, an unparalleled real-time panoramic view of the outside world would be displayed for passengers. Even Superman would be jealous of this luxury. [Read more…]
Here’s some tactile nostalgia… but it might give you seriously sore thumbs. Spanish photographer Javier Laspiur has created a trip through the game controllers of yesterday, capturing a familiar, first-person view of many well remembered systems from the last 3 decades. A long time fan of gaming, his series doesn’t record the year the device came out, but instead makes it personal, tracking the first year he laid hands on each system. [Read more…]
