Solar Oven Transforms Salt Water to Drinkable Water

Monday 08.20.2012 , Posted by

Of all the water on earth, only an incredibly small percentage is available for us to use and drink… the remainder is largely highly salty water, or at best brackish water with unhealthy levels of salt. For much of the western world, where water is plentifully available and piped right to your location this is hardly an issue for concern; but in countries where limited water availability is compounded by heavy pollution and miles of walking each day to collect it, the situation becomes a lot more dire. Enter Italian designer Gabriele Diamanti and his fascinating Eliodomestico. [Read more...]

Stately Sandwiches: A Tasty Adventure Around the U.S.

Friday 06.29.2012 , Posted by

For all you sandwich loving photographers out there, this is going to be a really tasty treat. Kelly Pratt, a self described sandwich lover who views a well made one as an art form, has recently started Stately Sandwiches – a project where she’s making handfuls of bread encased goodness for each of the 50 states. Using regional recipes sourced from locals to each area, she’s documenting her culinary adventure by laying out each sandwich’s ingredients neatly on a cutting board and photographing them from the same vertical angle. Later – after consuming her artful creation – she adds useful typographical elements and a map of the state where the recipe came from. Tasty. [Read more...]

The Tiny World of the Eurasian Harvest Mouse

Thursday 06.14.2012 , Posted by

These little mice might be the most endearing little creatures out there. Known as the Eurasian Harvest Mouse, they are the smallest european rodent – only about half the size of a normal house mouse – and live in fields of tall grasses and cereal crops like oats and wheat. Their long tails are prehensile, giving them the ability to wrap around their playground-like living space and climb high into the air. They build circular nests and raise their young, unlike other mice, regurgitating food into their mouths much like birds. French photographers Jean-Louis Klein & Marie-Luce Hubert spent a year and a half with the cute little creatures, capturing the intricacies of their community in an astoundingly intimate way.

The Streets of Varanasi- A Photographic Journey

Saturday 06.09.2012 , Posted by

Regarded as one of the most sacred cities in the world by the Hindus, Varanasi, historically known as Benares, has been touted as “older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together” by Mark Twain. The Ganges River runs through the heart of Varanasi and many Hindus take pilgrimages to bathe in the sacred river, washing themselves of their sins. Fascinated with the people in one of India’s oldest cities, James Hotham, a photographer from Bath, England, began a project in January 2012 photographing the communities living along and behind the riverfront. The Honey Hunters of Nepal

Monday 06.04.2012 , Posted by

When we think of honey, we don’t think of scaling a cliff with giant bees to get it. These images tell the photographic story, shot by Eric Valli, of the Himalayan Gurung men of Nepal harvesting honey.  The images, shot in 1987, are so modern for being an almost 25 year old shoot and while the unbelievable nature of the photos make it hard to believe that they are not staged, they simultaneously have an intimate feeling that is so natural and real. Valli captures the essence of these astounding men on their incredible journey to do something that seems so simple, but is not in the least. [Read more...]
