Wednesday 12.21.2011 , Posted by

Want to make a real difference this holiday season? Seed of Hope, a Kenya based humanitarian group has a really amazing grass-roots project that is greatly effecting the lives of hundreds. What’s the challenge? As much as 80% of teenage girls in Kenya never have the opportunity to attend secondary school. Because of this lack of education, their life options growing up are severely limited and they often find themselves pressured into high-risk ways of survival, from child marriage to prostitution. Their lives all too frequently include great human abuses, extreme poverty and hunger. This problem not only effects their lives, but the community fabric as a whole.

That’s where Seed of Hope is coming to the rescue. This straight forward organization is educating girls, giving them the knowledge they need to strike out on their own, helping themselves while also providing support for their families and community. [Read more...]

Freight Farms: Grow Fresh Food In Any Environment

Tuesday 12.06.2011 , Posted by

At the moment we face a food dilemma in western cultures: a society accustomed to the all-year availability of fresh produce and the rising cost of transport, both environmental and financial. Much of our fresh produce, especially in colder climates like the eastern United States, comes from far off places like southern California and Chile, traveling many freight miles before it reaches the market and finally our tables; but is there a better option for getting fresh cucumbers, peppers and lettuce in the winter? Slumdog Photographer of the Decade

Jonas Bendiksen, photographer for Magnum and creator of The Places We Live.

There are all kinds of places we as humans live.  We live in three bedroom homes, apartments and studios, closets in New York, caves in Turkey, sailboats and even teepees. At times, we also live on streets, cardboard mats and in scrapmetal sheds. The list can go on.

As we continue to grow as a community, more and more individuals are moving into cities for work opportunities. This makes these urban dwellings absolutely massive and many find themselves living in slums, high rise cement apartments or another form of alternative housing. Worldwide there are one billion people who live in urban slums, and that number will double in twenty five years according to the United Nations.

Jonas Bendiksen is a Norwegian photographer who shoots for the co-operative, Magnum Photo in New York City. In partnership with the Nobel Peace Center, Jonas shot photos of some of the largest urban and slum dwellings in our world today and made it interactive. Here are a few snapshots of what Jonas saw while he was traveling around the world.
