As libraries around the world are moving towards the future and digitizing their collections, this has been no easy task. The fastest scanning method up until now involved cutting books up to feed them through a quick scanner, which seems blasphemous to do to rare editions, but the alternative of manually scanning each page would be far too tedious. But low and behold BFS-Auto, a robotic book scanner that can digitize books at the rate of over 250 pages/minute without damaging the book in any way! [Read more...]

Zeitgeist 2012: Year In Review
It’s hard to believe that 2012 is almost over and what an amazing year it has been. Google has created an amazing re-cap highlighting the most memorable and the most “Googled” events of the year. It’s pretty uplifting to see that inspirational and incredible things, such as historical space leaps, Olympian athletes, people uniting to make a change, and a young boy with cerebral palsy walking to his parents for the first time, beat out the Kardashians. Unfortunately Honey Boo Boo still made the cut…Enjoy the video nonetheless! [Read more...]
New Light for Developing Countries Runs on Gravity
As we flip a switch to light up a room or use our cell phone flashlight to find our keys in the dark, it’s easy to take for granted how lucky we are. In many developing countries throughout the world, the people still rely on kerosene to light their way in the dark, which can be very dangerous and cost up to 20% of a person’s income. Looking to address this problem in the most efficient way possible, a team of engineers from the UK have designed an amazing light that runs on gravity and the weight of rocks or sand. As of now, the cost of each light is $10, which would pay for itself in 3 months of not using kerosene, but with further R&D the team thinks they could get the cost down to $5 each. [Read more...]
A Window that Forecasts Tomorrow’s Weather
What if every time you looked out a special window you saw tomorrow? What affect would that have on you and your outlook on life? If you could simply look and see that tomorrow was going to be rainy, would that make you depressed, or would it cause you to make better use of today? Would a clear blue sky make you excited about the coming day, or look negatively on the one at hand? Mathieu Lehanneur’s technology based window, Demain est un Autre Jour (Tomorrow is Another Day), explores these ideas and even more. [Read more...]
An Ethereal Sculpture Made of 26,982 Pennies
Robert Wechsler is known for taking everyday objects – things we are used to experiencing in a standard fashion – and flipping that experience on its head. Take the common copper penny for example. Wechsler recently created a series of three sculptures made entirely out of the ubiquitous little coin, and yet the result is something you would never expect. [Read more...]

One Hot Year: Visualizing US Fires in 2012
By just about any standard, 2012 was a massive year for U.S. wildfires. According to data from both the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and NASA, over 9.1 million acres burned this year… and that was only tracking until November 30th. That figure places 2012 as the 3rd most wildfire filled year since 1960, and with the total number of fires being 55,505 – a relatively low number – the year holds the current record for the largest average fire size.
