Word Animals: Creatures Made of Typography
These whimsical animals might at first appear to be made of funky 60s amoeba shapes, conveniently fitted together to make a cute creature… but a closer look reveals that those shapes are actually letters spelling the name of the animal they’re creating. The clever images are the work of Dan Fleming, a British/Australian graphic designer who works in brand identity and logo design. These images look like they could be the perfect logos for a future zoo redesign or inspiration for motion graphics on Animal Planet. [Read more...]

Lovely Leaf Lettering
A new typography project by Mei Linn Chan transforms green leaves into every letter of the alphabet along with each number 0-9. The Malaysian designer, who is currently completing her final year of study for her degree in Graphic Design in Curtin University, Australia, meticulously created a series called “Leaf Type.” Aside from carving out a block letter into each leaf with an exacto knife, she also followed the veins to carve out inside spaces, making the type look like gorgeous green lace doilies. Bold Typography in Vintage Japanese Newspapers
As a designer, it’s easy to get stuck in the style trends of today… so here’s some typographic inspiration from vintage Japan. Coming from a large collection of 3000 ads from the years 1891 – 1945 (put together by the University of Tokyo), these vintage newspaper pages feature a bold style we don’t frequently see today. Huge glyphs boldly displayed in neat blocks. The emphasis here is often on the arrangement of elements, rather than a reliance on imagery… something to which the both vertically and horizontally orientable Japanese characters lend themselves well.
