London Underground Posters at the Transport Museum
The iconic London Underground is celebrating its 150th year of operation this year. The “Tube,” which opened all the way back in 1863, still serves the city with trains packed to capacity at rush hours, shuttling people to places both central and more remote. Almost as famous as the trains themselves is the design that has sprung up alongside the long running system – so to celebrate the anniversary, the London Transport Museum is showcasing 150 Underground posters from the past. Stereoscopic Stitch: Embroidery Based Typography
Unless it’s brail, it’s not often you can reach out and touch the type that you’re reading. Graphic designer, Aries Wan recently created an experimental type project which allows us just that. Her work uses traditional hand embroidery to create the alphabet, numbers and a selection of punctuation marks, but manages to still give a nod to old-fashioned four-color printing at the same time. Each of her letters uses two CMYK colors, offset as if by printing error, to create what she calls an “optical 3D effect.” [Read more...]
A[rchitecture] B C: A Building-Based Alphabet
English photographer Peter Defty has recently produced a fantastic print for lovers of unusual typography. Using just his camera, his talented eye and a lot of looking up, he’s created an entire alphabet using just the shapes of gigantic architecture. His print, titled Geordie Alphabet, features buildings shot in abstract. The space between the often modern, city-based structures is what creates the highlighted lettering we see so prominently when viewing the print at a distance. Curvaceous Typography Created with String and Nails
We’ve covered work from half of the talent behind Athens based Corn Studio before. Andreas Xenoulis’s reflective Bodoni Girl poster wowed us with its stylish tribute to the classic font. Now we bring you the other half of this multi-talented equation; new work in the form of curvacious string-based typography from Dimos Stathis. He’s created a new sign for handcrafted jewelry and accessory maker, Petrol, using the corporate identity Corn Studio produced for the company. It utilizes 2000 small nails and a lengthy 700 meters of embroidery thread to create a sensuously curving recreation of Parachute Type Foundry’s script font PF Champion Script Pro and a custom butterfly embellishment. Word Animals: Creatures Made of Typography
These whimsical animals might at first appear to be made of funky 60s amoeba shapes, conveniently fitted together to make a cute creature… but a closer look reveals that those shapes are actually letters spelling the name of the animal they’re creating. The clever images are the work of Dan Fleming, a British/Australian graphic designer who works in brand identity and logo design. These images look like they could be the perfect logos for a future zoo redesign or inspiration for motion graphics on Animal Planet. [Read more...]
