Saturday 04.28.2012 , Posted by

Do you like to watch television? Do you have a favorite show that keeps your attention every Thursday at 7pm? How deep is your knowledge and understanding of that show? Two artists decided to take themes and icons from certain American TV shows and create minimalist posters of them . Do you think you can guess which one is which? [Read more...]

The Solar System: Beautifully Visualized in Scale

Friday 04.27.2012 , Posted by

If you could get all the planets in the galaxy together for a photo shoot in the studio, it would probably look a lot like these insanely well done illustrations of the planetary crew. That’s right too… these aren’t Photoshopped satellite images, but actually 3D digital illustrations of our most local cosmic neighbors.

Created by freelance designer David Fuhrer, each of the planets is rendered against a white background, much like one would photograph a new car in the studio. The stark background brings out the bright hues of the colorful orbs, unlike the starry black background we are used to seeing. [Read more...]

When you work among nearly 70 creative businesses, individuals and organizations — from a BBC office to a playhouse and even a life drawing school — what do you do to introduce everyone? Create a beautiful infographic of course! Split recently produced a family tree of their very creative neighbors for the first ever Quarry Hill Social, an event designed to not only raise public awareness but also foster relationships between the many highly crafty and cultural businesses tucked into Quarry Hill in Leeds U.K. [Read more...]

Fake Japanese Characters Market Fake Products

Wednesday 04.18.2012 , Posted by

Japanese culture is famous for its highly unique character design… from the iconic Hello Kitty, to artistic manhole covers and sometimes totally weird product mascots. To many eyes, these characters don’t even make much sense with what they are selling… but that’s a big part of the charm. Taking his cues from this unusual design sense, Argentinian artist Juan Molinet is creating an entire series of fake Japanese characters marketing equally fake products. The colorful figures are quirky and completely spot-on. [Read more...]

Bringing Back the Pennant

Tuesday 04.17.2012 , Posted by

Have you ever wondered what happened to those good-old fashioned pennants of our past? I remember my walls as a child being covered by colorful pennants from all my favorite sports teams. The simple felt triangles were motivational and symbols of dedication to your home team. Now, The Peoples Pennant project is reviving those pennants, but instead of championing your favorite sports teams, they celebrate everyday life. The Peoples Pennant team consists of Jessica K. Heltzel, Tim Hoover and Eric R. Mortensen. To add a little bit more detail to the project, I had the opportunity to interview them, which went as follows: [Read more...]

Data + Design Project: The Bubble Charts of March

Tuesday 04.17.2012 , Posted by

Here at Visual News, we’ve been looking for designers/illustrators to participate in an ongoing design series called the Data + Design Project. As an off-shoot of Column Five Media, we are ardent supporters of the union between data and design, so in February we started curating the Data + Design project gallery as a way to show how flexible and beautiful data visualizations can actually be. Santtu’s Painterly 3D Illustrations Go Pop!

Tuesday 04.10.2012 , Posted by

I really can’t pull my eyes away from these snappy illustrations by Santtu Mustonen. His highly unique style has a three dimensional, painterly look that is unlike anything I’ve seen. The renderings are as crisp as they are bright, many looking like extruded swirls of multi-colored wet paint. Only adding to the grip this work has on my attention, Santtu has animated a number of his illustrations in GIF form, giving them some of the smoothest and perfectly rendered motion I’ve seen from this sort of thing. StudioVox: Connecting the Creative/Contest for $200!

Monday 04.09.2012 , Posted by

One of the most difficult things for an artist to master today is keeping up in the digital age, and that means getting their work out to the masses (and that certain someone who can buy/pay them for their work). I’ve spoken to artists who either have no clue of where to be on the Internet, or don’t have the time to keep up with 9 different profiles across the creative portfolio landscape. Creating art and producing quality work is hard enough without having to promote, submit, and constantly stay up on the ever changing digital landscape of art, photography, and design blogs. The list of sites to promote your work is massive, so which do you choose? Where is your audience? Where do you even begin? StudioVox, looks to help you with that. [Read more...]

This Just In: The Future is Illustrated and Retro!

Wednesday 03.21.2012 , Posted by

From utopian to dystopian worlds, on thing can be said about the future predicted in illustrator Matthew Lyons’ work: it’s going to look seductively retro. Drawing heavily from Bauhaus like boxy architecture and the wedge shaped automobiles of Bertone, his works place this now classic design right next to modern technology like tablets, wind energy and smart phones. For those in love with the aesthetics of the past, this is paradise. [Read more...]

Keeping Ads Honest: Crazy People Style

Sometimes the most simple ideas give you a good laugh — the things we often think but don’t say, the truths we know but don’t pass on. Matt Stevenson of Fathom Creative and Chelsea Fagan of Thought Catalog, took a little time out of their busy days to push those thoughts to the surface with a handful of “Honest Ads.” From a soggy bowl of Rice Krispies, to a comparison of Starbucks to crack, their ads punch you in the face with honesty.
