Reflections of Youth: Ageless In the Mirror
Alzheimers is a disease that many of us have lost loved ones to with 5.2 million sufferers in the United States alone. It’s a disease that can be more devastating to those closest to the person suffering than the victims themselves as their memory slips away. In this fascinating set of photographs, Tom Hussey shows the confusion that a person with dementia might endure on a daily basis. This “Reflections” collection was used in an ad campaign for Novartis’ Exelon Patch, which is prescription medicine for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia. Hussey won a Gold Addy Award from the American Advertising Federation for this set. [Read more...]

We Love Friday!- Lovely Lines of Laundry
After the refrigerator, a clothes dryer is the biggest energy hogging appliance out there. Consumer Energy Center estimates that it costs an average of $85 to run annually, which adds up to $1,530 for the average lifetime of a dryer on top of the cost of the dryer itself. Although East Coast winters would make it hard not to use a dryer, there are plenty of months when the sun will do all that drying for free, yet in the US there are outdated laws in some states from after World War II that make hanging clothes outside illegal (JustLiveGreener.com). Since 1995 Project Laundry List has been working to get these laws changed and has helped with the passage of “right to dry” legislation in 11 states so far. If you have a minute, sign the petition so that all Americans can have the right to use free energy to dry their clothes. Daredevil Hangs Off Tall Buildings
There seems to be a trend happening in Eastern European countries. It’s “Let’s climb the highest buildings, bridges and towers in our region and then photograph us on their edges.” There have been some significant risk takers of the daring feats such as Vitaly Skywalker who we covered last year. Skywalker got caught by authorities though and has since reduced his stunts. Abandoned America: Neglected Architecture of the Past
America is a young country. Attracting people from all over the world seeking new opportunities and livelihoods. The nation grew rapidly and in its growth built many buildings to accommodate the population and its needs. There were factories for jobs, schools for children, hospitals for care, and theaters for the arts. Times change though, and companies dry up; hospitals require upgrades and people migrate to other cities for work. Rusty Fire Hydrants Become Imaginary Planets
When we look up at the sky we often see formations of earthly objects in the clouds or constellations in the stars at night, but Adam Kennedy looked down to find some rusted structures that look like they belong in the sky. On his daily commute to school at San Francisco State, where he studies Cinema, Kennedy noticed that the rusty knobs on top of the old fire hydrants he passed looked strangely like undiscovered planets in our vast universe. He photographed the knobs and with a little Photoshop manipulation he transformed the rust into continents and the paint into oceans to produce his first fake planet. He posted a picture of the before and after images on Reddit and made the top of the Front Page. Since his hobby was so well received, Kennedy decided to start an indiegogo to raise the funds he needs to make a book of his images.

Glimpses of a “Lost Nigeria” from His Mothers Eyes
Do you remember watching family photos on slide film? It was all the rage back in the beginning in the 50′s and into the 70′s. Today, it’s quite easy to display photos on a big screen, but in the past, using a slide projector was one of the few ways to really display images on a large scale. While use of slide film and its projectors have significantly declined, it doesn’t excuse the fact that there are still many archived slides gathering dust in boxes across the world. Senongo Akpem decided to digitize his Mothers slides documenting life in Nigeria during a unique period of history for the country. [Read more...]
