Astronaut Fashion: Spacesuits Through the Years

Imagining what the iconic picture of Buzz Aldrin on the moon might look like if he weren’t wearing a space suit can be stomach churning when you think about all of the elements that the personal space ship protects against. Without the pressurised gas to maintain internal pressure, all of the gases in his body would expand at a rapid rate, causing his blood to boil, and he would have no oxygen to breathe. NASA has a great interactive that shows a friendlier cartoon version where Andy the Astronaut demonstrates what would happen to a human in space without protection, then you can take a virtual tour of the space suits that have made history. Enjoy watching the evolution of the space suit as you scroll through this collection. [Read more...]

Wearable Food from Korean Artist Yeonju Sung

These dresses completely contradict the purpose and notion of clothing. Not only are they destroyed in wearing, but also provide not protection for the body and wouldn’t last a week even if left alone. Why? Beautifully, they are constructed entirely out of edible items, from tomato, to mushroom and eggplant. In this sense, the clothing also completely contradict the notion of food. Who would eat a dress, however beautiful? [Read more...]

Pixelated Video Game Characters Enter the Real World

Víctor Somoza Benítez 1

Remember that feeling you had every time your thumbs made Mario leap from the brick stairs and slide down the flag pole to complete a level? That’s kind of how this series by Víctor Somoza Benítez makes me feel. Much like the works of Aled Lewis, Somoza takes the pixelated characters from your favorite old school video games and inserts them into the non-pixelated real world. Somoza, who is also a photographer takes most of his pictures in Spain where he lives in Palma de Mallorca. [Read more...]

The Bizarre “Truppe Fledermaus” from Kahn + Selesnick

It’s hard to get more bizarre or intriguing than these recent works from the New York/British collaborative duo Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick. Their mixed media series of photographs, paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures see a world of greenmen, bats and death dancers prancing about the countryside and the near outskirts of sometimes familiar towns. The imagery and the characters themselves often tightrope a fine line between the playful and the haunting… and it only gets better when we know the story behind what’s going on. [Read more...]

1 Nicolas Ritter

There’s nothing like an amazing animated GIF to make you smile. In this brilliant GIF series by Nicolas Ritter, your mind might fool you into thinking you’re looking at pictures, but when you catch the single person moving you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Appropriately titled “One”, Ritter’s animated photos bring all of your attention to the actions of a single human being in a crowd. It’s like a grown up version of Where’s Waldo! set on the streets of London. [Read more...]

Vintage camera collector Chris Hugues was picking up another camera to add to his 300 plus collection. To his surprise, he found two packages of slides in the worn leather case. Taking a close look he found that the slides were taken by a French soldier from WWI. There were some photos of battle and unique images of the time period. Thus began a journey to “hunt” vintage cameras with undeveloped film still in the case or camera. [Read more...]

We Love Friday!- Spring is Sprung!

Robin Williams has said that “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’” It’s a time when flowers are starting to bloom, the days are getting longer, and you actually want to be outside! After trudging through crazy winters my whole life, growing up with lake effect snow in Cleveland, then sloshing through the grey puddles in NYC for 5 years, I was always delighted at every sign of Spring. I didn’t think I would experience that in California, but I was wrong. Though the Winters here are much milder, I am so happy that Spring is finally here and I love seeing the blossoming trees and chirping birds everywhere! [Read more...]

Pictures of Hipsters Taking Pictures of Food

While I will argue that not only hipsters take pictures of their food, I agree that this habit is getting a little out of hand. In fact, there is entire Tumblr called Pictures of Hipsters Taking Pictures of Food dedicated to this strange phenomenon. Although I’m guilty of taking some food pics at restaurants here and there, looking back at them is never really thrilling, so it seems the only purpose of taking pictures of food is to show your friends what you’re eating which seems like a waste of time. I’m starting to miss the days when I had no idea what my friends from high school were eating for each meal, before I knew about every baby milestone of people I haven’t spoken to in years and probably never will again. Matej Peljhan 1

Most children have big dreams. Maybe they want to meet their favorite athlete or go to Disney Land or be a princess. But 12 year old Luka dreams of doing things that most children take for granted- basic things like walking, getting dressed, and feeding himself. Luka was born with the degenerative disease muscular dystrophy and has just enough control of movements in his hands to operate his electric wheelchair and hold a pen in his hand to draw. Slovenian photographer Matej Peljhan helped Luka’s dreams come true through this fun photography project. Rather than working some photoshop magic, he used real props to make Luka look like he was break dancing, skateboarding, swimming, shooting hoops, walking up stairs, and flying away with a red balloon! RCA Secret: Can You Spot a Famous Artist in the Crowd?

Thursday 04.18.2013 , Posted by

Simone Rowat

It’s not very often that you get to purchase a famous artists work at a bargain price. Most of the time those are the stories we here about in the news: “Picasso purchased for $26 at yard sale – new owner as surprised as the world.” The long running RCA Secret offers you almost the same chance. The annual sale, hosted by London’s Royal College of Arts, featured 2700 postcard sized artworks this year, some from students, others from often famous invited guests. The catch? The name of the artist is only revealed after you buy the piece. So, can you spot a Paula Rego at 20 paces? [Read more...]
