With the escalation of tensions between the United States and North Korea, a highly intense geopolitical standoff has gripped the attention of the world and centered the focus of several photo journalists on North Korea. Isolated, reclusive, and highly militarized, the mystery and intrigue of North Korea rises due to the highly controlled, censored images that are typically released. Amidst the threats of a nuclear strike, the U.S. focuses their attention on the ruling party and leaders of the North Korean military. [Read more...]

Nick Pedersen Migration 2

We covered Nick Pedersen before when he created a wildly verdant, jungle-like vision of the post-apocalyptic future. In those scenes, wild men eked out their existence in cities long ago abandoned by their massive populations – now overgrown by plant life, they were suitable even for hunting. The Philadelphia based artist has now turned his talents toward creating a vision of our current time, yet still with his focus on themes of ecology and the preservation of the environment. Somewhere between the real world and our daydreams lies Bas Waijers’ Bedoodled series. The Brooklyn-based graphic designer, originally from the Netherlands, enhances his city photography with adorable little characters doodled in blue ink. From Clifford sized pets napping over an abandoned building, to monster bees buzzing above the trash cans, to shy guys hiding in the vents and rusted corners, Waijers brings ordinary photos into a fun, fantasy land. With his sketchbook in hand, as he goes about his life in NYC, Waijers imagines more lively versions of the reality before him and shares his fun, creative visions by sketching them out and inserting them into the original setting. It’s not everyday one gets a chance to be close to volcanic lava and photograph its powerful flow… but in the eastern part of Russia, a volcano is providing that opportunity after awakening from a 36 year dormant period on November 27. The fiery mountain is called Plosky Tolbachik and has been shooting lava from two fissures, creating flows which have already destroyed a few buildings – including a research base, a seismology center and the base of a national park. Hong Kong is a city of many towers, so much so that often it can be hard to see the sky as the massive buildings consume much of it. Well known for his eye-opening book Material World: A Global Family Portrait where he asked an average family in 30 locations to empty out their homes to show their possessions, Peter Menzel came up with another brilliant book idea. Teaming up with his wife Faith D’Aluisio, the duo got to spend time with 30 families around the world and analyze their weekly groceries for Hungry Planet: What the World Eats in a Week. In the book they describe the weekly food purchases and costs, showing photographs of the family at home, at the market, in their community, and these portraits of the entire family surrounded by a week’s worth of groceries. Om! Whether you’re looking for a fountain of youth, more flexibility, strength, or a balanced mind, yoga can help. It’s no wonder that yoga studios are popping up all over the US. In the past four years, the number of Americans practicing yoga has gone up by nearly 30%, with 8.7% of adults involved in a yoga practice. (HuffPost) Whether you prefer sweating it out in a 105 degree room for Bikram yoga, energizing yourself with other yogis in a class, popping in a video for home practice, or creating your own routine, give it a shot. I can’t remember where I heard this quote, but I love it, “Saying you’re not flexible enough to do yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a bath.” Most people who do yoga have gotten to be as flexible as they are because they do yoga. We searched Instagram for this collection of strong, proud yogis to inspire everyone to give yoga a try. [Read more...]
