Those seriously afraid of heights may want to look away. Photographer Ahn Jun goes to great heights, literally, to get the most perfect shots for her death defying series titled “Self-Portrait.” Although it would be fairly simple to photoshop a project like this, the artist insists that these are the real deal. The Korean photographer has been adding on to this collection since 2008, making her way to some of the tallest buildings in New York City, Hong Kong, and Seoul. To get the best picture, the fearless Jun sets up her camera to drive mode then gets in position and chooses the shot where she looks the most at ease or aggressive- never fearful. [Read more...]

It’s Only a Paper Moon: Good Times, Vintage Portraits
Long before Instagram, photo booths or even the common ownership of a camera, you could get your photograph taken sitting on the moon. Often a fixture at fairs, parties and carnivals, people sat in the crescent of a smiling “paper moon,” as if lifted to the stars. A photographic phenomena primarily of the early half of the 20th century, it captivated the imagination of a world pre-Photoshop and gave many a memorable image of great times. [Read more...]
Trees in Nature with White Canvas Backgrounds
It never ceases to amaze me how much the network of branches on trees so closely resembles the circulatory system of mammals and living in Redwood territory I find myself in awe of trees all the time. Photographer Myoung Ho Lee captured the beauty of trees in a unique and tricky way. With his production crew, ropes, bars, and cranes, he created a canvas backdrop for different trees in all four seasons at varying times of day. The largest canvases were 60 x 45 feet and with a little retouching to remove the ropes and cranes, Lee created the illusion that the white backdrop is hovering behind the tree. By separating the tree from it’s natural landscape in the square of the canvas, but still revealing that landscape in the border, he focuses the viewer’s eyes right on the majestic qualities of the tree itself. We Love Friday! – Stunning Blown Glass
Long before people started making glass, it could be found in nature; when lightning struck sand or volcanic eruptions caused rock and sand to fuse together (obsidian). Humans first made glass around 2000BC, but the level of skill increased dramatically with the invention of the blowpipe in 30BC. Blowing glass has been popular since medieval times, and although the creations and techniques have gotten more interesting, the tools remain the same. According to Sea Life Creations, “The craft of glassblowing was passed from father to son, and from master to apprentice. From its beginnings, the formulas and procedures used in glassmaking were closely guarded. At times in history, the penalty for disclosing secret techniques was death!” Thankfully the tradition has been kept alive and there are amazing glass blowers all around the world. Here is a collection of some of the most interesting blown glass creations from Instagram. [Read more...]

Artists Create 1000 Portraits of a Young Girl
Many people are thrilled to have someone paint or draw an image of their child… but imagine having 1000 portraits created of your precious little creation! That’s about the gist of this very cool project featuring adorable 3 year-old Adora Levin (aka NyuNyu). Landfill Photography: Classic Chinese Landscape Style
Once filled with nothing but beautiful, natural, mountainous, tree-filled landscapes, the now over-populated China has some views that aren’t quite so serene: landfills. To contrast the idyllic past with the realistic present, Chinese artist Yao Lu photographed the landfills, covered in green netting, then digitally manipulated the photos to look like the familiar vintage landscapes in traditional paintings. He adds mist, trees, and buildings to the heaps of rubbish, making them appear beautiful and serene until you look closely enough to realize that they are not actually mountains. [Read more...]
