Attempting to define the Burning Man gathering to someone who hasn’t been is like trying to explain the color of blue to a blind person. The gathering, which started in 1986 on the beaches of San Francisco, has evolved to over 50,000 participants yearly in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. English photographer Peter Defty has recently produced a fantastic print for lovers of unusual typography. Using just his camera, his talented eye and a lot of looking up, he’s created an entire alphabet using just the shapes of gigantic architecture. His print, titled Geordie Alphabet, features buildings shot in abstract. The space between the often modern, city-based structures is what creates the highlighted lettering we see so prominently when viewing the print at a distance. What does Seaweed say when it’s stuck at the bottom of the sea? “Kelp! Kelp!” If you’ve ever eaten Laffy Taffy, then you know there are lots of silly sea jokes, but what’s not funny is the damage that humans are causing to our most mysterious ecosystem. Underwater photographer Jason Isley sees this first hand, so he decided to bring some toys along with him to capture it firsthand. He creates comical scenes, like a sea slug getting a speeding ticket, along with some showcasing more serious environmental concerns, like ghost nets, litter, and fish bombing. Although he does occasionally brighten some images with Photoshop, the miniature scenes are actually set up underwater. Kevin Cooley has become well known among publications for his photography, and he is most well known for his work at night. Initially he following film crews that were using a lot of light and took photos of the sky as it glowed above buildings and houses. As his work continued, he created a series called Nachtfluge. In this project he took long exposure photographs of flying aircraft at night, which then created bizarre stripes and dots in the sky. [Read more...]
Those seriously afraid of heights may want to look away. Photographer Ahn Jun goes to great heights, literally, to get the most perfect shots for her death defying series titled “Self-Portrait.” Although it would be fairly simple to photoshop a project like this, the artist insists that these are the real deal. The Korean photographer has been adding on to this collection since 2008, making her way to some of the tallest buildings in New York City, Hong Kong, and Seoul. To get the best picture, the fearless Jun sets up her camera to drive mode then gets in position and chooses the shot where she looks the most at ease or aggressive- never fearful. [Read more...]

Long before Instagram, photo booths or even the common ownership of a camera, you could get your photograph taken sitting on the moon. Often a fixture at fairs, parties and carnivals, people sat in the crescent of a smiling “paper moon,” as if lifted to the stars. A photographic phenomena primarily of the early half of the 20th century, it captivated the imagination of a world pre-Photoshop and gave many a memorable image of great times. [Read more...]
