Well-known for hosting Rembrant’s The Nightwatch, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum invited Turner Prize winner Richard Wright to decorate the ceiling outside of the room that holds the piece. Laying on his back, hoisted up a few feet from the ceiling, Wright painted 47,000 black stars in his typical mind-warping fashion. [Read more...]
There’s Something Different about these French Fries
Ben Frost is a highly talented Australian artist that is meshing a unique blend of iconography, art, politics and advertising into McDonald’s pop art. His paintings on McDonald’s fry packages are layered with images that are surprisingly refreshing, political and humorous. Frost uses his canvas to pop shots at western norms of consumption, pop culture and art. [Read more...]
The Bizarre, Surreal Worlds of Painter Jung-Yeon Min
Her work rides a fine line between the grotesque and the beautiful, at once begging us to explore deeper and at the same time frightening us with what we find. Korean born, Paris based Jung-Yeon Min creates elaborate landscapes filled with organic, globular forms that resemble things as lovely as clouds and as revolting as innards. Like multiple worlds layered on top of each other, geometric forms and elements of reality weave their way into the scene – from polar bears and humans, to distant mountain ranges and lost luggage. It’s a world of the strange and the familiar. [Read more...]
Historical Figures Get a Modern Makeover
To celebrate its new series, The Secret Life Of …, the UK’s history TV channel Yesterday commissioned artists to work with historians to provide a modern characterization of some of the most famous figures in history, as if they were alive today. The remixed paintings provide an educational account of what each figure was like which is stretched to assume how they would dress and carry themselves today. Modern day Queen Elizabeth I sports a Hilary Clinton hairstyle with a stylish, designer suit and keeps her notoriously hideous teeth concealed with a straight face, though it’s likely she would have veneers in today’s times. William Shakespeare would surely be a hipster and he is shown with piercings and hair plugs to keep up with the actors of today. [Read more...]
What if Picasso’s Subjects Were Truly Abstract?
It’s commonly known that Picasso painted portraits of his many lovers, often with loads of style but less than realistic features… but what if he painted only what he saw? Flóra Borsi has creatively re-imagined four classic portraits with distorted subjects from famous 20th century painters. In each example she humorously (and a bit shockingly) brings to life the character in the painting – warped features and all – and places them posing next to their portrait. [Read more...]
Colorful “Maximalist” Paintings by Jordan Piantedosi
When I first ran across the paintings of Jordan Piantedosi I was really having trouble nailing down how to define them. Her central female figures are made from a smattering of color in all kinds of shapes… and sometimes interwoven into the mix are playful elements like Can-Can dancers, seashells and superheros. Where does such work fit when there’s so much going on at once? It helped me out a lot when I found out Piantedosi considers herself a “maximalist” painter, which as you’d guess is the exact opposite of a “minimalist” painter. For Jordan Piantedosi it’s “more, more, more!” [Read more...]

105 World Artists Decorate Paper Dogs
If you gave 100 artists the same square canvas’ and told them to paint them, what you got back would be a lot of square paintings. In a similar way, British design studio Lazerian is doing the same thing… only they are doing it with paper dogs. Nicknamed “Gerald” their pointer like pup has been passed around to artists world-wide (with a head nod to the now classic CowParade), creating a pack of colorful and creative dogs for people to collect and assemble themselves.
