What once were doors, rolling pins, coat hangers, and picture frames are now the skeletal remains of vertebrates. Montreal-based artist Maskull Lasserre brings these objects to life- or perhaps death. By carefully carving into the wooden surfaces that we commonly overlook in our everyday environments, Lasserre reveals a deeper world inside. For the month of December until January 19, 2013, his woodworkings were exhibited as a set called Fable in Toronto’s Centre Space gallery. Freestyle Creations Peek Into the Universe

While most artists have a concept in mind as they approach the canvas, John Speaker is more of a freestyler. As he sits down to start a piece, he touches his marker or paintbrush to the canvas and lets his consciousness take care of the rest. He says,

“The creation becomes an evolving chaos of the purest emotions; they do not represent happiness or sadness, confusion or enlightenment, hope or doubt; they are simply the culmination of everything and nothing. The concept of a mistake becomes completely irrelevant in the process, as the confines of our societal definitions have been shed, and the energy of the universe is allowed to present itself unrestrained. My creation becomes something more than an expression of life. It has become life itself.”

When I first discovered John Speaker’s art, I got lost in each piece, trying to interpret and put my own spin on the images before me. Stay tuned after the jump for our interview with him, then check out JohnSpeaker.com to see more. [Read more...]

Brad Anderson Celebrity Simpsons 1

What if a live-action version of the Simpsons was created? Like the Flintstones and Transformers movies, many cartoons have been adapted for live characters. But, in the case of the famous yellow family in the long running hit from Springfield – who could possibly be chosen to portray such memorable characters as Homer Simpson and friends? Artist Brad Anderson gave the question a stab, photoshopping versions of the family and other famous characters from the show using famous celebrities to fill each roll. [Read more...]

Peter McFarlane Metal Art 3

Peter McFarlane lives in an artistic world of possibilities, one which challenges him to remix the objects of life and create captivating, re-contextualized forms. After his first job working on a factory assembly line taught him a deep suspicion of technology, much of his work has revolved around examining the affect of technology and consumption on our culture. The metal work we bring you here sees chainsaws reworked into fanciful birds and whales, while spoons become bird nests and saw blades become farming implements. [Read more...]

John Holcroft Illustrations 13-1

There’s just one word for the illustrations of John Holcroft: smart. In his work metaphor abounds and humorous juxtaposition is rampant. We see business men sucking the teat of the piggy bank, a literal trap of love, and just what it feels to be on the London Underground. With such imaginative interpretations of everyday life, it’s no wonder he’s worked with such clients as the BBC, Financial Times and The Guardian. [Read more...]

Strings of Buttons Become Musical Instruments

Remember those beaded curtains from the 70′s? Miami based artist Augusto Esquivel has used a similar concept to create life sized musical instruments- but walking through these would be a sin. The installations were created by stringing colored sewing buttons on to dangling fishing wire from an overhead support. Esquivel meticulously placed each button so that your eyes will fill in the spaces to see each object. Jean-Luc Samuel Gallic calls it three dimensional pointillism. At his most recent exhibit, Esquivel showcased an upright piano, cello, harp, and phonograph fashioned in this method.

Air Drive: Classic Cars Take to the Air

Renaud Marion Air Drive 5

Looking like some gravity defying retro-futuristic vehicles out of the movie Gattaca, or maybe Earth-based versions of Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder, the automobiles of Paris based photographer Renaud Marion might look even cooler than their wheeled counterparts. Calling the series ‘Air Drive‘ the effect is pretty simple, but the result is seriously captivating… a quick removal of the wheels on each of these cars makes them take the leap into the future of flying cars.
