One of a Kind Sand & Shell Mosaics

Monday 12.10.2012 , Posted by

If these works by Svetlana Ivanchenko were paintings, they would be impressive, but the fact that they are mosaics made of sand, shells, and sea glass makes them beyond incredible. The Ukranian painter uses natural materials to create imaginative mosaics that highlight the beauty of nature and life. Raised in Yalta on the Black Sea, Ivanchenko was able to collect a plethora of natural colors and textures to use in her pieces. The time, patience, and talent it must take for her to complete one of these intricate pieces is unfathomable to me. See more of Ivanchenko’s gorgeous works on Tutt Art. [Read more...]

UNITIИU: Hilarious Mirrored Images of Celebrities

Monday 12.10.2012 , Posted by

They say that the most symmetrical faces are considered to be the most beautiful, but what if we move the axis of symmetry away from the center? The popular meme known as UNITIИU involves just that- mirroring pictures so that the bilateral symmetry produces hilarious results. According to KnowYourMeme, it began in 2006 with a picture of Condoleezza Rice raising her hand. The mirrored image made her look like a crazy, evil dictator while causing the “UNITED STATES” plaque in front of her to read “UNITIИU“ and so it began. Reddit keeps the meme alive with an awesome sub-reddit of the same name. Shown here are some of my favorites, but be sure to head over to r/UNITINU to see more and participate in the fun. Artist Sarah Johnson offers some suggestions with her hilarious GIFs of Batman doing mundane tasks like scooping up kitty droppings, eating breakfast, and using the men’s room. See the entire hilarious collection on Sarah J’s Ordinary Batman Tumblr and why not check out some of her other fun animations while you’re at it? [Read more...]

The Big Apple From a Bicycle’s Point of View

Sunday 12.09.2012 , Posted by

Though some might think it would be crazy to bicycle through one of the busiest cities in the world, those who have been to New York City know that often times a bike can be faster than a cab in getting you from one place to the next, and a lot more sanitary than public transportation. To show his friends what riding a bike through the Big Apple feels like, sports photographer Tom Olesnevich attached his DSLR camera, upside down beneath his bicycle with a Gorillapod. The result: some outstanding shots of the city from a unique perspective. [Read more...]

Dude, check out this gnarly Tumblr called Hair Barrels! Each photoshopped image features a famous surfer catching a wave in a celebrity’s hair. The chosen celebrities are just as entertaining as the surfers hidden in their manes. Each picture has a clever title that incorporates surfing terminology into the person’s name or character and they are quite hilarious! Some of my favorites are Wavy Gaga, Barrel Streep, Jay Len-Overhead, Se-Layback Gomez, and Dude Law. [Read more...]

Gravity Glue: Miraculous Balancing Acts

Friday 12.07.2012 , Posted by

I would hate to play Jenga with this guy! Michael Grab has mastered the art of finding balance points and in this created amazing rock sculptures held together by nothing more than gravity. The result is absolutely beautiful, ephemeral pieces that would be awe-inspiring to see in person. Grab often shares his spiritual talent with others by creating his Gravity Glue sculptures in public places. According to Grab, “Alongside the art, setting rocks into balance has also become a way of showing appreciation, offering thanksgiving, and inducing meditation. Through manipulation of gravitational threads, the ancient stones become a poetic dance of form and energy, birth and death, perfection and imperfection. they become a reflection of ourselves in a way; precariously sturdy, mysterious and fragile.” [Read more...]
