Ethyl-Gasoline-Ads-from-the-1950s-goat

In a time long before Photoshop, when advertising departments looked something like the set of Mad Men and every piece of art was hand-crafted, this advertising campaign from the Ethyl Corporation was highly ambitious and still succeeds in capturing our eye. The once giant Ethyl Corporation is a manufacturer of fuel additives designed to stop engines from knocking better than fuel without – a point driven home by this vintage series of ads… after all, a collie is very different than a cauliflower. Richard the Homeless Piano Tuner 4

Many people in our modern world feel trapped in the rat race, daily struggling to make ends meet in their constant battle against bills… but for what? For Richard Roberts the answer after he looked around his apartment was simple: he didn’t need all this stuff. His TV and Playstation sat idly while he worked all day as a piano tuner trying to pay off years of remaining school debt. What use was an apartment if he didn’t have the time to enjoy it. Robert’s unusual and minimalist solution: go homeless. [Read more...]

Marcin Aleksander Surowiec Tattoos 10

Take classic tattoo art, mix it together with a rainbow of color and some modern abstract design… and if you’re lucky you might come out with the work of Polish tattoo artist Marcin Aleksander Surowiec. His works channel many of the classic linear skin art forms, yet twist them into something completely original: his characters get geometric patterns in the place of their face; rainbows of color are overlaid on print-like forms; and then there are his completely original designs. russia-huge-meteorite-bolide

For those that missed it (and considering the massive impact few could), a huge meteorite hit earth last week in Russia. In the land of the dash camera, videos far and wide captured the very rare event in its full shining glory – a missile like streak through the sky and an incredible window breaking crash following soon after. For the Russian population the event was one that stirred memories of the not so distant past, one of the tree flattening Tunguska event in Siberia just over 100 years ago. That blast was the largest impact event on earth in recorded history. [Read more...]

Nadine-Boughton 9

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of reading a mid-century men’s adventure magazine, you’ll immediately recognize their place in Nadine Boughton’s work. For the muscular strong men featured in the periodical pulp-fiction; wrestling alligators, shooting sharks and rescuing scantily clad damsels in distress was all in a days work. When Boughton ran across these 50s and early 60s magazines at the flea market, she wondered how they would look set against the sleek interiors of the same era. As she puts it, it’s “men’s adventure magazines or ‘sweats’ meets Better Homes and Gardens.” [Read more...]

fig. 56- not normally associated with seasonal transformations, some stream-side stones actually will begin to pixellate in late autumn:early winter

People often talk about nature ‘decorating’ itself as the seasons change: leaves change colors in the fall, the world turns white in the winter, and things green back up in the spring. But what if nature actually did decorate itself in an artistic fashion? Artist Norm Magnusson has been experimenting with that idea, painting objects he finds in the natural world and through that creating something highly imaginative and fantastic. [Read more...]
