Instagram Logo Comes to Life

The combination of a polaroid camera and Instagram may be the dream of hipsters everywhere… and with a little luck that dream might become a reality. A marketing and communication studio called ADR Studio has created a concept design of an Instagram camera. They call it the Instagram Socialmatic. The camera would be a 16GB WIFi enabled camera that looks just like the Instagram logo. The concept features a flat 4:3 touch screen, WiFi and bluetooth function for instant sharing to Facebook, Led flash and optical zoom, two camera lenses for regular and filter shots, and even a 4 color printer for the polaroid fans out there. The printed images would include a QR code for connecting to photographer’s Instagram profile. Simply Illustrated: An Interview with Ty Wilkins

Do you ever wonder what happened to that kid in your kindergarten class who could make the Taj Mahal out of building blocks? These beautifully arranged illustrations are the handy work of that kid all grown up, Ty Wilkins. When you see his work it makes a lot of sense that he was first a designer, and then migrated into the world of illustration. His uncanny ability to create full illustrations with only the most basic shapes is a big indicator… and he made a note to mention that the same process he went through in making logos, he did for his illustrations. Geometric Order Amidst Starling Chaos

A murmuration of starlings may seem random, but one artist has found the geometric order to this phenomenon of nature in her work. About six months ago a video flooded the internet of two women out on a canoe while a murmuration of starlings danced above their heads. After the video went viral, murmurations have been a hot topic online and even in art. Catherine Ulitsky, an artist living in western Massachusetts, captured the unique flock patterns of the starling murmurations on camera and gave order to the seemingly random group by painting connections between the birds. In each photograph, Ulitsky uses vibrant colors and straight lines to create beautiful geometric patterns in one of natures great phenomena. “Carefully observing natural phenomena reminds me constantly of the limitless complexity and wonder of the world we inhabit,” said Ulitsky of her work. See Scotty Draw: Illustrations for the New Century

How can you not stop to admire Scotty’s colorful, mid-century inspired illustrations? It is abundantly apparent that after seeing his craftily arranged illustration scenes, he also has a solid understanding of design principles. The illustrations are full of carefully planned negative spaces and shapes which give each a balanced texture. Scotty Reifsnyder has an ever-growing portfolio of work in a style he coined: New Century. His background and schooling, both in design and illustration, has made his art win numerous awards, features, and a long line of clients. Two Brothers, One Piece of Art

The work of two brothers is more than just a piece of art, it is a form of joint communication. James and Tom Gulliver work together to create colorful, explorative art. Tom was born with Down Syndrome and the work he creates with his brother allows him to communicate past his disability and use the art to show his feelings and thoughts. It is neat to see the brothers work together and create such interesting work. Each piece looks like an experiment where all of the parts are shown in an exploded view. They are full of layers, which makes them so intriguing. James makes the main image and Tom creates the outlying drawings. The subject matter seems to focus on people and their individual perceptions of the world around them — it gives the viewer a unique peek into both artist’s minds. [Read more...]

Bringing Back the Pennant

Have you ever wondered what happened to those good-old fashioned pennants of our past? I remember my walls as a child being covered by colorful pennants from all my favorite sports teams. The simple felt triangles were motivational and symbols of dedication to your home team. Now, The Peoples Pennant project is reviving those pennants, but instead of championing your favorite sports teams, they celebrate everyday life. The Peoples Pennant team consists of Jessica K. With a little dissecting, Photoshop and After Effects, Jeff Desom reveals the entirety of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” set. For all of you who have seen this film, you will understand why this panoramic view is so fascinating. As the plot flowed from window to window in the original film, the world on the movie screen seemed so much larger. Been Everywhere: Johnny Cash Inspired Luggage Labels

Ongoing design projects have been all the rage lately amongst the design community, and this luggage label project in particular has been getting a lot of viewers and designers very excited. The Been Everywhere Project was born out of graphic designer and illustrator, Adrian Walsh‘s, love for Johnny Cash’s music. After hearing the song “I’ve Been Everywhere” in his music queue, he came up with the brilliant idea of creating a project where he would invite talented artists to take part and design luggage labels for each of the 92 locations Cash mentions in the song. Once the project started, just as Walsh had hoped, designers began choosing places that meant something to them personally. Whether it was where they grew up, had family, visited, etc., each label so far has been very unique and meaningful. [Read more...]
