A Vintage Train Hotel

Thursday 12.23.2010 , Posted by

Instead of shipping old train carts to a landfill, a Dutch hotelier decided to use the old transit parts as building blocks for an eccentric hotel in Hoogwoud, Netherlands. The various rooms of the Controversy Tram Inn are decorated with retro decor, including an impressive collection of vintage American pop culture items. [Read more...]

Neon Projector Graffiti

Graffiti is sure eye-catching, but not always in a good way, especially because to many people it connotes vandalism. Instead of giving up on the idea of using public wall space for promotion, creative agency Dentsu came up with a clean spin to promote GreenTomatoCars: use neon laser beams to project graffiti. The hydrid taxi company has these ads displayed in highly trafficked areas of London. [Read more...]

Socially-Conscious Stocking Sculptures

A row of Christmas stockings hung by the fire are cozy and traditional. A cluster of vibrant Christmas socks strung up to create a sculpture is anything but conventional. This Christmas display was created by Montreal creative agency Paprika, for Domison, a retailer that has become known for creative and eco-friendly holiday installations. The sleigh-like swoop of Paprika Christmas Display comprises 600 socks fastened together with safety pins. For the holiday season it can be seen hanging from the ceiling of the Domison store at 4117 Boulevard Saint-Laurent. After the holidays, the socks will be removed and given to 300 cold toes in need at a local homeless shelter. [Read more...]

Frozen River Swim and Frolic

Tuesday 12.21.2010 , Posted by

If you’ve ever run through the snow and jumped into a hot tub you might be able to relate to what the people in these photos feel like… well, at least running in the snow wearing next to nothing. These people, however, aren’t jumping into warm hot tubs after their frosty frolick – they’re jumping into Siberia’s Yenisei River. Apparently these swim club members have made a tradition of it. Running around in Speedos and bikinis in -36 degrees? That’s just not my kind of cool. [Read more...]

The Giving Movement

A hefty yet graceful movement is transforming the world as you read, and it’s propelled by a wave of philanthropists on an unwavering quest to abolish global poverty. We’re calling it the Giving Movement, and it’s backed by bighearted philanthropists that range from billionaires giving away their fortunes, to people with much more modest bank accounts whose pledges are proportionately generous, if not more so.

Warren Buffett, Melinda French Gates and Bill Gates

Making the news recently was Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement to give away half of his fortune as part of The Giving Pledge. The sum promises to be mighty as Facebook has been valuated at over $50 billion. The Giving Pledge, which was started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, “is an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy,” according to GivingPledge.org.
