If you’ve ever used Snapchat, you know just how addicting it can be. Even though the popular app has only been around for a few years, that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the most used social sharing tools today. But have you ever wondered what it would have looked like if Snapchat had been around for decades? What about in the 50s? Thanks to Stockfilm, you can now see exactly what that would have looked like.
The Colorado-based studio creates stock video clips from footage from the 1930s to 1980s using complex video processing techniques to transfer all of the video clips to digital. The archive includes clips of everyday people and families enjoying holidays together, parties, kids, pets, and just about everything you’d find on social media today.
The collection started when Stockfilm’s founder Phil Maher inherited a number of home movies and decided that the films should be saved as historical documents. “Our mission is to give a voice to the unsung heroes of yesterday that captured their personal reality of the times as future generations deserve access to diverse and real perspectives,” says Maher. “In other words, you can’t see where you’re going if you don’t understand the past.”
Using the collected clips, 26 GIFs were created producing stories that would have appeared on Snapchat if it had been around in the 50s. With over 30,000 videos in the archive to work with, the Snapchat GIFs feature stories that you would definitely see today, like sports events, family outings, and holiday celebrations. The technology may have changed, but life still remains the same.
