For 48.1 million Americans, knowing where their next meal is coming from is a struggle. This startling PSA video highlights that struggle by showing how hunger and food insecurity starts with an empty plate. The nonprofit Feeding America and the Ad Council worked with Chicago-based ad agency Trisect and released the video spotlighting hunger in the United States in September for Hunger Action Month.
The video is a 30-second spot is modeled off popular recipe videos featuring an unknown person cutting herbs, seasoning a filet, and finishing off a dish with some sauce. The catch is that the herbs and filet are invisible, the plate empty, and the sauce is nonexistent. The resulting “dish” is just a bare plate lacking any source of nourishment.
The end of the PSA states that an estimated 1 in 7 Americans are living with the reality that their plate may be empty and they will have access to inadequate nutrition at some point in the year.
“It is always heartbreaking to meet a mother or father who fears that they will not be able to feed their children,” said CEO of Feeding America Diana Aviv. “They know that their children cannot reach their full potential if they don’t have enough to eat…We must come together and take action now—our children cannot continue to run on empty.”
