Seat belts lend themselves to safety, but rarely artwork. In the recent ads for Qatar Islamic Bank, however, a plea is made to make them an integral part of Middle Eastern culture. To drive home the narrative, Memac Ogilvy transformed seat belts from automotive components into artwork.
In fact, the designs are reminiscent of the beautifully intricate tile work of mosques. A time-consuming process to deliver such a light, curious, and wonderful impact, the ad series almost encourages the viewer to go for signs of digital manipulation rather than handiwork. But it isn’t there. These resonate with such truth because the time was put in to arrange them in such elaborate patterns.
