This Is The Remix…Of Classical Painting

Kanye meets Monet in this mashup series by artists Gisella Velasco and Toni Potenciano. For their Fly Art Tumblr page, the duo create clever images pairing popular hip hop lyrics with famous paintings. The Mona Lisa gets tricked out with words by the equally-infamous Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna calls out some of Whistler’s Mother’s naughty secrets.

While the irony and irreverence of the series is humorous, comparing these two very different artistic forms provokes some serious questions about popular culture. What becomes popular and why? How do people use art and music to translate what is happening in our world? And are certain cultural ideas in fact ‘timeless’ and simply being addressed in different ways throughout history?

Velasco and Potenciano are sure to spark both laughs and musings in their snarky, smart work. Ultimately, however, the artists assert that their goal is simple: to “[pay] homage to the good things in life: fine art and fresh hip hop.” All I can say is that my love for Fly Art has got me lookin’ crazy right now.
