Mom Shows Her Daughter How to Play Dress-Up as Influential Women Rather Than Disney Princesses

With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to share this amazing idea set for little girls unlike any costume you’ll find in a store. For her daughter’s fifth birthday, Austin,Texas-based photographer Jaime Moore wanted to do a special photo shoot with her daughter. She looked online for dress-up costume inspiration and 95% of her search results yielded how-to’s for princess transformations. While princesses are awesome, there are a lot more amazing and realistic things for young girls to aspire to be. Aside from Disney, Kate Middleton is likely the only princess that little girls have ever heard of, so showing them other women who have actually done amazing things for the world gives them more to dream about.

Moore explains what inspired this project:

[The Princess costume overload] started me thinking about all the REAL women for my daughter to know about and look up too, REAL women who without ever meeting Emma have changed her life for the better. My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what REALLY matters. I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. We chose 5 women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday but there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world…… let’s set aside the Barbie Dolls and the Disney Princesses for just a moment, and let’s show our girls the REAL women they can be.

What a beautiful way to empower young girls! See larger images so that you can read each quote in Moore’s blog post “Not Just a Girl”. You can also hire Moore to photograph your special events! See more of her wedding and lifestyle photography on her website.

I really adore this concept giving kids (girls or boys) positive roll models to dress up and encouraging them by photographing them to so the child can see themselves in an iconic way. Since Jaime Moore took it a step further using the photographs to promote herself as well I might’ve suggested spending a little more time trying to technically capture the original photograph but that’s my personal taste.

    Nice article!
