Celebrity photographer Matt Hoyle’s new book Comic Genius: Portraits of Funny People reads like a veritable who’s-who of hilarious talent. He’s got 130 portraits ranging from classic icons like Steve Martin, Dick Van Dyke and Carol Burnett, to today’s breakout stars like Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman and Steve Carell. As you can see, Hoyle doesn’t stick to one type of comedy or comedian. There are stand up artists, viral video successes, late night TV hosts, and film stars… anyone who has devoted their life to being funny.

Hoyle’s book is excellent for the fact that it gets to the core of each comedian we see. Not simply looking for laughs, the images go deeper and capturing each star’s particular brand of comedy in moments from the zany to the deadpan, laugh-out-loud to the contemplative.

Launched in conjunction with the book are two video shorts with Funny or Die. One featuring Kermit the Frog and Steve Martin playing Dueling Banjos (yes, awesome nostalgia!) and another with Neil Patrick Harris as Buster Keaton. New videos will be premiering each week, with upcoming examples featuring Tina Fey, Jason Bateman, Robin Williams, Chevy Chase, and more.

You can find out more about the book (featuring an introduction by Mel Brooks) at ComicGenius.com, or more about the photographer himself at MattHoyle.com.

  1. I don’t know much about photography but i would say, these are all lovely pictures. Funny and awesome pictures of famous celebrities. I absolutely love the first photo. I think it’s actually cute with the hand of the Steve Carell’s photo with the dog. They both look cute!
