Although it has only existed in the West for a relatively recent 400 years, the Eastern world has been drinking tea for over 4500 years! According to an ancient legend, Chinese Emperor, Shan Nong, discovered it in 2737 B.C. He preferred to drink boiling hot water and one day some leaves randomly fell in while he was walking through his garden, giving off a strong, pleasant aroma, making the first cup of tea. Through the method of seeping in boiling water to make tea, the Eastern world discovered medicinal benefits of many different plants. It wasn’t until the 17th century that Dutch and Portuguese sailors introduced tea to the West through trade with China and it quickly became a status symbol for the wealthy. A century later it was enjoyed by people of all walks of life as imports expanded and prices went down. Read more about the fascinating history of tea here.[see_also]
